The big problem with Metroid Prime is that because it took place in the first person, everybody expected it to be a first person shooter, and a lot of people ended up sorely dissapointed when they discovered that their beloved point of view could be used for things other than shooters.
With the exception of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2, I can't think of any other first person adventure games...

Why does the PC allow for more genre-defining games? I don't think I can answer that. But I do know that it has. Some games exist primarily for a PC setup, and are re-defined every few years (RTS, usually done by Blizzard games), but the true genre benders most often show up on PCs first. Perfect example is Deus Ex. Never have I played a better mix of first person shooter elements and RPG elements. The game is brilliance, pure and simple.
This isn't to say I don't support Nintendo, far from it. The Revolution will probably be the first of the next-gen consoles I get. Maybe a PS3 first, my PS2 is starting to feel it's age, and if it offers complete backwards compatability... anywho. I wouldn't say Nintendo goes so far as to re-define a genre. They were the original definers of many genres, but they don't re-define the standards of genres. They do, however, do fun things with an existing genre that are just plain fun that no one else evers catches onto. SSB, as a perfect example.
I'll cease my ramblings now.

Re: Nintendo Revolution
Interestingly enough, if the Revolution is anything like the Gamecube, it might be more successful than the PS3. Example: A friend of mine once bought a Gamecube. Tired of the lack of "mature" games for it, he sold it off and bought a PS2. And for a time, it was good. But, later, he found himself wishing he hadn't sold off his Gamecube. Games like Metroid Prime 2 and Paper Mario motivated him to get rid of the PS2 and get another Gamecube. So, if Revolution has the same kind of "charm" that Gamecube had (as far as games go, anyway), then Revolution might do very well, despite its being "underpowered".

Plus, as far as 'Mature' games went, the GC also got REmake and RE4.

The price and the excellent first-party games are what is going to make the revolution successful (if only moderately). I know a ton of people who bought the gamecube for Zelda, new Zelda, and Metroid. They bought the system because they wanted to play those three games. They justify themselves because the gamecube is not an expensive system. I know very few people who bought Xbox to get Halo1 or 2 (mostly cause they knew someone who had it and could hang out at their place when they wanted to play) So if Nintendo can keep the price down and crank out the big games as quickly as possible they should be fine.

Hmmm... I think Nintendo owns some kind of right to 3rd party games released on their systems. You'll notice they re-released Donkey Kong Country 3 just recently and Rare is now owned by Microsoft.

That's very true. Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mario will keep Big N afloat for quite a while. LoZ is the main reason I've kept my alliegence to Nintendo all these years,

Alot of people all over the net point out that the new Nintendo will be a lesser system thus being its downfall, well I disagree with that. Nintendo has always been able to get titles that seem to have better content that then big flashy games normally released on xbox or ps2. I see more of this trend, sure you will be able to see the sweat of that uber stealth guy on the 360 and ps3, but anyone that has played Viewtiful Joe knows that it was first released on the GC and was an awsome game with craptacular graphics. The Revolution will continue to produce fewer games of superior gameplay quality while Sony keeps trying for more gore and Microsoft continues making games whos only replay value is in XBL, a paid for service.

$4 a month isn't a big deal. Even I can afford that.
Also, I don't think the Revolution will be a lesser console. I heard it would be a system similer to the 360 and it'll be slightly more powerful or at least at the same level.
Much like last generation. The Gamecube was 8-10% stronger than the Xbox I hear, which, if it's true, is a good example of why the PS3 games won't look as good as Sony originally boasted.
