I have a hunch that there was a glut of mediocrity during the 8-bit days, the 16-bit wars and even during the Atari era. It is probably just more apparent to those who grew up with one generation of games, and are still playing games during the latest generation of games. Some things become more noticable over time.

As for your second point, it certainly is a good one, the idea of my kid (if I had one) benig able to play the same fun games that I did when I was his age is a happy thought.

I wonder though, does the mediocrity come from games that are the latest and greatests within their franchise and genre only? I wonder when more of the same is good, and when it becomes trite.

Ignore me, I'm wondering aloud incoherently, and straying from the topic.

Hey, they're not publishing the ENTIRE list of games EVER created. Just a few that would probably be popular downloads.

Indeed, that would be a fscking huge list. Didn't the NES/Famicom have just over 1000 titles released for it?
While I'm enthusiastic about all these classics being available(see this thread), I cannot help but wonder if perhaps Nintendo has run out of ideas and is relying on the nostalgia of gamers who grew up with nintendo to sell their new platform. We see again and again, Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid. I've not grown tired with each iteration yet, and each one has been fun, but I sometimes worry about how much longer games can be released into their major franchises before that franchies and the games within them become stale.

Maybe I'm just being overly anxious.
It's funny because people say things like this, and then Nintendo goes out and tries different things, and everyone screams "NO NO GIVE US MORE OF THE SAME DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
