unknown anime - please help

I'm trying to remember this anime movie I watched once. It may have been movie or one of those weird dreams I have. Well here is what I remember.

There was a huge ship traveling though space with a whole city on it. They were running from something most likely aliens. They have been away for a long time looking for a planet to live. They are attacked and forced to put the ship into attack mode but the ship transforms and it will kill a bunch of the city people when it does.

I do know that it’s not a transformer anime cause the ship is way too big to be. But it was so long ago that I might be wrong. Anything will help, thanks.

The first bit sounds a lot like Tenchi Muyo, but the second bit doesn't.

Sounds like Macross.

hey i just took a quick check on google looking at macross pics and i found one ship that looks like the one i remember. i'm thanking it was an OVA but if thats right i would have been around 12 or 13 when i seen it....i should remember more of it. well when i get home from school i'm downloading it.

I'm leaning towards Macross or Robotech (Robotech had a gigantic robot thing didn't it? I can't remember, its been a LONG while.)

Well, the music was great, I can't really remember their being much else besides that... ;
