Hair Dye Question

Post by gravity » Sat Jun 04, 2005 2:49 am

I don't know much about hair dye. I bleach my hair for cosplay, and that's about it. Nothing more, usually.

But, after watching Elfen Lied, I thought it would be pretty cool to dye my hair pink. Scare the bejessus out of te next anime club I'll be attending in Wyoming and what not. (The main char has my hair cut and basic personality.)

The only problems are:

1) I don't know any places to buy a permanent pink-light purple hair dye.

2) Is it true that a person CAN'T permantly dye their hair an 'unnatural' color? Yes, I know root grow out and what not, but I'd like to keep this color in for more than one night.

Bright bright BRIGHT colours will fade through washing, sun exposure etc. You can't avoid that.. but you can keep your hair bright for as long as possible by using a shampoo for coloured hair.

I've coloured mine twice in the last month because with working out in the fire and smoke, I've had to wash it every night and it faded so quickly.

That's the hair color, for people wondering. (The top one is Nana, the bottom is a young Lucy. I'm more like Nyuu, for those who know the series.)

Gravity, try a beauty supply shop (like a "Sally's"). They usually have alot of colours natural and the bright pink, purple, etc.

I used a prelightener because I have very dark hair.

20 minutes in, my hair was turning golden orange, and I figured that was enough. Put the purple through, and it's dark violet.

Very pretty colour... but not the scary purple that I was after. I'll leave it a few weeks and then lighten it again.

I look very weird as a blonde :P

I'd say the best place that I know of would be a Sally's or Hot Topic. If you have a Hot Topic, ask them about it, i'm sure they'd know about all the best ways to keep your hair vibrant.

I used to die my girlfriends hair (for christmas she had half her hair red and the other half green, very cute) and it last nearly till Easter. Just make sure you bleach your hair and get it as white as possible for the color that you want to come through.

The only crayola color I've seen at Sally's is Manic Panic, which is semi, I think. They have some really nice colors.

I'd love green or blue hair, but I'm afraid I'd fry my hair trying to bleach it.

Tip for bleaching hair, because I bleach mine often enough now to be a Grand Master (none's fallen out and it's still nice and soft, so I declare myself Grand... stupid Sith! Not a Jedi! ):

Use a creme, not a liquid. It's much easier to use, and much easier to control that way. I use a cheap bleach powder mixed with 30 Volume creme. It works wonder.

Make sure you're wearing a disposable shirt. Or one that you don't care about getting stained. The first time I bleached my hair, I ended up bleaching a bit of my shirt as well.

ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.

Don't bleach your eye brows yourself. Going blind is so not worth the blonde hair.

Don't bleach more than once a week. You risk your hair falling out if you do if it's an especially strong bleach, like the type I suggested.

Poke Emma for pics. :P

Wash your hair THOROUGHLY afterwards.

If your skin feels like it's on fire, or hurts, wash it out. Immediatly. The bleach might be dissolving away your scalp. :? (Yes, this happened to me the first time.)

Make sure you have an hour to do nothing but sit and blonde.

If you don't want to smell like bleach, put a plastic bag over your hair while it bleaches, then you can lean against something!

I also submit a demand for photos of purple haired Smao, as well as pink haired Lith. I think that unnatural coloured hair, used as a natural color (not "punk") is about the only fashion trend that hasn't already happened before. :|

They're over in the piccies thread.

Not very purple though, there's no sun at the moment to show the proper colour.
