I toyed with the idea of learning the violin recently, but I snapped the A-string a few weeks ago and haven't been able to afford to replace it, so that kinda went nowhere.

Used to play the trumpet, but never got too far with that.

I played a mean recorder in third grade, though. My class did a few shows and everything! Well, more like one show. And I can't remember the show itself either... I can picture, quite vividly, the pre-show practice and warmup, but I can't remember actually having done the show... *shrug*

I used to play the tenor saxophone. I loved it, but I quit after high school because I didn't have my own. I played one paid gig with a few of my friends. I think I got $60. *sigh* Those were the days. I almost miss high school. I also have a bass collecting dust in my closet. I never got far with that one.

I would look for an all-ages corp, but the problem is it's going to be out-of-state, like Colorado or Texas at the closest most likely, not to mention that I don't think my back would handle the sousaphone or a bass bugle like I could have at 20. Boo.
Reading Perl is like reading music. It can be a little hard to get into at first, but once you can read it, it's like food for the soul.

I played trombone for 4-5 years, and at one point I was in about 4 different school bands (Jazz, Rock, Concert & the school musical). Then we moved interstate & my school didn't have a music program for brass instruments.

Last year I did vocal for the Yr. 11 music class' band, that was fun but I'm really not very good- so its definetly not a career.

I want to start trombone again, as I did really enjoy it. At the moment I kinda focused of finishing high school first though.

Just like you Koeniou, I played trombon. I stopped once out of the army.

I've been playing guitar off and on for years now, although I'm that great yet, but I'm getting there. I also played set (drums that is) for quite a while, as well as piano/keyboard.

Although I havn't touched a piano for quite a while, I could probably still play a few things.

I would love to be in a band, and I even started working some things out with some other musicians, but due to time and money, it has yet to become a reality.

Lessee....

I played trumpet up till middle school. I actuall was in the band for lower school at one point, and then when it came to our performance for our parents a the end of the school year, I choked, and got too nervous to play. I managed to work up enough nerve to participate in the last song (and I didn't screw it up either, yay!). I stopped playing after that.

Since, then, I've had a passive interest in learning guitar, but not enough of one to actually pursue it.

I could never make up my mind. I started on alto saxophone in elementary school, then started learning french horn in middle school, while also picking up baritone saxophone for jazz band. High school saw me march horn for all four years, but I also picked up a bit of trumpet. Then there's my dabbling in vocals and piano. Took a semester of vocal performance at the local college, and have mostly sung baritone in church choirs... though for congregational singing I'll sometimes change parts after a verse or two. Working on tenor keeps my high voice active until the next time I inflict my karaoke stylin's upon the world--or get slammed by Cowell when I audition for American Idol :) I've plunked on the piano a bit all my life, though I was most focused when I took lessons in '99. Still dabble with that a bit, my printed music collection consisting of Billy Joel, Tom Lehrer, and the Carpenters.

BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID.

One of the funny things about discussing musicians and instruments and vocal performances and such is that really, when you get down to it, you can be highly technically proficient in a number of different instruments, and yet if it had no feeling I wouldn't consider you a real musician, as music contains but is not necessarily satisfied with the striking of the right note at the right time any more than someone who can type without misspelling is creating literature or someone who can color within the lines is an artist. For some reason, this seems to become especially true in vocal performance groups, namely school choirs. They focus so much on the correct posture and exaggerated facial expressions and body language and the methods of physically manipulating various parts of the mouth, throat, and torso to generate the arbitrarily decided "correct" positions for sound that they often end up with the musical equivalent of a cardboard box: rigid, square, forgettable, and lacking in any nutritional value.

Now, that's not to say that various individuals in a school band or vocal ensemble aren't capable musicians, of course, but in general the stale nature of many band programs--again I refer especially to vocals/choirs--is something that's bothered me for a long time. What makes it worse is that such programs are often lauded as successes by the "experts in academic music" who make such judgements. But really, while there are aspects of music and music history than you can study academically, it's one of the disciplines in life that cannot be fully taught--or, more importantly, learned--in a classroom.

And I think that I may have just posted something that could be more easily summed up by simply referring to certain works like Mr. Holland's Opus. But it's something I could go on about for much longer if I allowed myself to do so :P

I'm a fairly decent singer. I'm also a piano novice. I'm hoping to improve my piano skills, though.

My current repetoir of songs on the piano:
Legend of Zelda - Main Theme
Legend of Zelda - Song of Storms
FFX - To Zankarland
Chrono Trigger - Battle with Magus

Hmm... all from vid games, what does that tell ya?
Power. Wisdom. Courage.
