The Dreamcast controllers were pretty good, too. Funny, I had no issue finding the original XBox controllers. In fact, we have two of them, because there weren't smaller ones available. Of course, damn near everything about the XBox I have is used.
That's another thing you have to give Nintendo, again. Nigh-indestructible. Two of my Gamecube controllers have gone through a car crash that totalled the car, and destroyed many things in it, and they have nary a scratch!
N64 controller: Most fragile controller ever.

Give me a controller and a good game and I shall destroy said controller in a week or two. I'm harsh on my controllers, I don't know what it is that I do to them, probably the fact that I pick the fastest character/vehicle possible and never stop moving. Mech Assault is a great game for destroying controllers.

Okay, I'll give you the 64 ones. Not up to Nintendo's usual durability standards.

All of my 64 controllers still work, even after several mario party sessions.
unsigged. For the children.

well, not the 'cube d-pad, but d-pads in general: fighting games.

I use the directional pad for games like Tony Hawk as well. I find it easier to do tricks that way.

And the SSX/Tricky games.

yes, I consider them to be "like" Tony Hawk. I also find that those games are more difficult to play on the GC because of the ant sized D-Pad on the controllers.

I can't see how you could play that on the CG OR the XBox ... I mean, what replaces the four shoulder pads? There's not enough buttons!

I'm not sure about the GameCube, but the XBox controller has just as many buttons as the Playstation controller. Though, if there is one issue I have with the XBox controller, it is that one cannot mash all the buttons at once. One of my criteria for a great controller is that all the buttons should be easy to hit at the same time.

I tend to worry today's controllers have too many buttons.

...True. But instead of four shoulder buttons, you get two trigger buttons, and the black and white buttons, which totally change the layout. Which again, I can't see how it would work for Tricky.

As long as a standard controller doesn't get as many buttons as the Steel Battalion controller it shouldn't be too bad :P

If you read the patent, it appears that the contoller functions will be housed in a game system, which implies a portable.
