Maddox: Moral Decay and Grand Theft Auto

Post by Beware of the Leopard » Fri Jul 22, 2005 4:08 am

Much like the infamous toothpick instructions of Hitchhikers' lore, recent controversy over the finding that Grand Theft Auto may not be appropriate for children nearly has me building an insideout insane asylum. Rather than talk about it myself, here's Maddox with what I believe to be the most finely crafted article on his site.

Wow! I could actually see that lawsuit going somewhere. Keep me posted on the details.

I find the whole situation hilarious, actually.

The Parents Television Council, the stupidest organization to perhaps ever walk the planet besides PETA, says
"I tip my cap to that first step of showing responsibility," said Tim Winter, the council's executive director. "Phase two needs to be absolutely getting to the bottom of this coding issue. How did it get into that game? How did it get past the ratings board?"
Gee, I dunno how that one slipped past the ratings board. Maybe the mod isn't part of the game as they released it? Stupid.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I've heard parents complain about movies and such before. I remember when I wanted to go see "Speed" and my parents told me it was violent. Another parent told my parents that "it was OK, there was only violence and no sex." As if sex were worse than murder.

My parents still didn't let me see the movie. I believe I was either 9 or 10 at the time.

If it's any consolation, Speed sucked hard.

I saw a trailer for it about three years after I wanted to see it and I was glad my parents with-held me. :)

Cruel Intentions was my "But mom, I want to see it!"

And then when I finally watched it, I loved it. Not because it was great, but because it was so bad that it was good. I'm not sure how my 10 year old self would have reacted to it, though.

If you liked that, check out Fargo's slightly more viseral interpretation of current events, while you're at it. Maybe leave a few suggestions in my thread on a similar aspect of this topic afterwards.

In a way, it is an example of moral decay, though.

And I say, we're not rotten enough, yet.

Sorry, but Rockstar kinda screwed up on this one. The content was included in the game, which you can see from the fact that it could be accessed on the console versions.

Accessed on the console versions? I thought it took extra code, hence the PC Patch, to do it, and couldn't be just done with the version burned to disc.

I submit evidence from probably the most dissected console game in existence. There is a not insignificant amount of stuff in that game that has been "removed." Images of Dalton attached to the Bond franchise (I understand he's rather touchy about that, due to being dumped after two films.) Levels formerly in single-player, now multi-player (and I'm talking item location and respawn points that come straight from the cartridge.) And a half complete level that Rare surely dropped work on very early in development. Most of the push button cheat codes for Goldeneye were only officially released (I'm not sure exactly when, but it should be at least 5 years after release) due to a dedicated action replay hacker with too much time on his hands discovering them in memory first.

Maybe Rockstar should have made a little more effort "removing" hot coffee. But I see no reason based on the Goldeneye above (and examples [1][2] in other games.) why we should believe it was left there to be found.

[1] See under "test rooms".
[2] See "Hidden Palace" as an option for the "Stage/Act Modifier" code.

Yup, there's a few sites talking about links to the X-Box version (at the least). Looks like they left the assets and code in, and just branched around it.

It might even take a GameShark or whatever to get to. But that's still a far cry from a user-created mod like Desert Combat, as it's still using code/assets including on the disc.

BtEO:

I'm not saying they left it in there on purpose. I'm saying that, knowing the scrutiny that they and the industry are subject to, that it was stupid to not make SURE that it was gone.
