Infin8Cyn has the right idea. You have a car because you need to get where you're going faster.
Funny. That's why I take the train. Also, saves on the cost of a car. Price of petrol in my world? Zero! Total commuting expenses per week...$22. Watching everybody stuck in the motorway bedlam of rush-hour traffic while I read my newspaper or surf the web on my laptop? Priceless!
For all the driving I do, I don't spend $22/week.

I stumbled onto this, thought it would interest some of you:

How are Vehicles Tested for MPG Ratings?
Vehicles are driven over identical driving patterns by professional drivers in controlled laboratory conditions on a dynamometer, which is like a treadmill for cars. The conditions that occur during driving, such as wind drag and inertia are accounted for on the dynamometer. There are two types of tests that are conducted: city and highway tests.

The city test is approximately 11 miles long and simulates a stop and go trip with an average speed of about 20 miles per hour (mph). The trip lasts 31 minutes and has 23 stops. About 18 percent of the time is spent idling (as in waiting for traffic lights). A short freeway driving segment is included in the test. The engine is initially started after being parked overnight.

The highway simulates a 10 mile trip with an average speed of 48 mph. The vehicle is started "hot" and there is very little idling and no stops.

How Are the Label Estimates Calculated?
Fuel economy estimates are calculated from the emissions generated during the tests using a carbon balance equation. We know how much carbon is in the fuel, so by precisely measuring the carbon compounds expelled in the exhaust we can calculate the fuel economy.

After the vehicles have been tested, the results are adjusted downward to account for conditions that occur on the road that can affect fuel economy which don't occur during laboratory testing, such as cold temperature, aggressive driving, excessive use of power-hungry accessories, among others. The city is adjusted downward by 10 percent, and the highway by 22 percent.
The equation for calculating the city or highway average fuel economy, given in miles per gallon (mpg), is:

FEave = (total sales / [(sales1/FE1)+ (sales2/FE2) + ... + (salesn/FEn)]

The calculation for combined fuel economy weights the city at 55 percent and the highway at 45 percent using the following equation:

FEcomb = 1 / (( .55 / city FE) + (.45 / hwy FE))
Yep. Auckland, NZ, is like that. 1.5 million people, one train line. Seriously. One. And it stops halfway through the city! Glad I don't rely on THAT any more.
Hmmm...apparently there are three lines, a western, eastern, and southern line. Is that new?

Roger that. Those were the days weren't they? I could fill the 6cyl Olds for a little over $5 and drive for weeks on that. I was one of the first in my class in HS to get their license, and then I was hot shiat. Ofcourse, a few months later the cool kids had their licenses and brand new cars of their own, and I was a loser again....but it was fun for a short while :P

<Ladies> hey edge! Can I catch a ride to school with you!?
<edge> YEAH BABY YEAH!

Ahh yeah, gas under a buck a gallon and I owned a '88 Ford Escort. Everyone wanted to ride the hooptee when we took long trips yet there were some requirements. The person behind the front passenger seat had to use the 1x4 to prop up the front passenger seat. While this sounds dangerous the board was only like 6-8 inches long and went mostly under the seat so it wasn't that bad, problem is you had to get in the back before putting it in. LONG LIVE THE HOOPTEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The greatness that is the PoS car is that you don't give a rats ass what happens to them. The back window was knocked outta mine and sat that way for months in the rain and all before I fixed it and didn't care. The broken passenger seat in it was another one of those "Who the hell cares?" things. Cig burns in the headliner and all that car was awsome because of its disposability. Common I paid like 450 bucks for it.

My first car was a 76' Volare with bad brakes and holes in the trunk so big that you could see the street. It had no radio, ran like hell.

I abused the crap outta it. Benz drivers used to swerve to avoid me, I was so fearless in it.

Gawd, I miss that car.

My question was more retorical than literal. There's just something primal about a gas guzzling behemoth that you drive like you stole it.

I keep looking at a vintaqe Dart for sale on Route 9 - I'm afraid to ask what he wants for it. It would be alot of fun for the Saturday blvd. cruise, especially once the factory mufflers are sawn off and glasspacks welded in. :D

Yes, but add in insurance, maintenance, registration etc etc and don't forget the cost of actually buying the car.

But don't forget to reduce time time traveled, add convenience and multiply comfort.

Oh, it looks like that on the pretty map...but half the time the trains just run from one end of that map to the other and back again. If you overlay that map over Auckland, you'd see just how little of the city is actually covered. For instance, Meadowbank (I lived in Meadowbank for a few years) is simply a suburb of Remuera - how they have it marked as a seperate line is mindboggling. The entire northern half of the city has no rail services at all! You'll note the International Airport doesn't have a station marked...

Compare that map with this one of Sydney, a city of similar physical size (note that Auckland is one of the biggest cities in the world - for physical spread - it's much larger than the likes of London (or so says Wikipedia)):
http://www.cityrail.nsw.gov.au/networkm ... ainmap.jsp

I live 200 metres from Wynyard station in the middle of the map.

You mean on trains? My train commute is 12 minutes, as opposed to 25 on the road, there is a train every 3 minutes so convenience factor is high (with no parking required at either end), and I find travelling on them comfy as. I can stretch out with my newspaper, play on my laptop or whatever...it's much easier than driving a car.

Skuzzo: You fail to realize that not everywhere has wonderful train systems like yours. I'll say that again. Not every single city in the United States or otherwise has a good public transportation system. A lot have none. When you are looking at 2 1/2 hours on a bus versus 30 minutes in a car, clearly the car is the better choice. Not to mention how horribly uncomfortable the buses are to ride here.
