Skuzzo: You fail to realize that not everywhere has wonderful train systems like yours. I'll say that again. Not every single city in the United States or otherwise has a good public transportation system. A lot have none. When you are looking at 2 1/2 hours on a bus versus 30 minutes in a car, clearly the car is the better choice. Not to mention how horribly uncomfortable the buses are to ride here.
I know - that's what I've been saying. I used to live in Auckland until last year, which had a shocking train system, so we suffered the almost-worse motorway system. Moving to Sydney, I've been very happy to discover the usefulness of a great train system. The locals complain about it, but they don't know how good they have it. What I can't understand is why so many of them suffer their cars when they DO have such a good train system. I can understand it if your local public transport system sucks, but in addition Sydney has a huge ferry network, an extensive bus service, a light rail system in addition to the main network, a tram system in the inner city, and a goddamn monorail. These people simply couldn't have MORE public transport, and yet they clog the motorways and crawl to work.

A lot of it probably has to do with wanting to remain independent, and not have to depend on some third party to get you to work or wherever it is you need to go. Automobiles are also much easier to transport a great deal of things too. People that drive their cars to work when trains/buses/monorails are faster and cheaper are a little silly.

Cars are a sign of independence. You don't need the state to decide when you get to go places. When traveling by public transportation, you're at the mercy of the planning authorities, and possibly unions (big problem every few years in Los Angeles when either the mechanics or drivers threaten to -- and sometimes walk out on -- strike).
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

Well, that's all well and good. Of course, when you get into a major accident and spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair, well at least you saved money on gas.

Fine, and you can consider that 200% differential between your fuel costs and mine as your insurance primium.

Well, if you really are that concerned about the price of gas, get a moped!
Think I'm kidding about the relative safety of a larger vehicle?
This is my truck after a 7 car pileup on a local bridge:

Keep in mind that I was #3 in the chain. Several of the cars had to be towed off the bridge. The two cars in front of me were totaled and at least one behind me was. I got off with the least amount of damage, less than a grand if I replace the parts myself and have the local body shop pull the hood.
It accidents like this, that I don't own a Shovelhead. I don't wanna die.

Oddly enough, I just got the ok on grabbing my driver's permit today in Driver's Ed. Aparrently(sp?), it's all I need to drive the moped my family got me to go around in. It's almost a damn motorcycle if you ever look at it. Less gas problems for me to deal with as well, hehe.
I still plan on getting my normal liscense, obviously. I just hope my moped won't be a screaming metal deathtrap.

Mopeds are a great way for a young driver who doesn't tend to go far to get around. Like HTRN said stay away from the major roads as much as possible because most drivers don't look out for mopeds and motorcycles while on the road. My buddy used to use me to ride one of his bikes while he road the other, to keep them in working order you have to use them and he rarely got to, we were ran off the road atleast once a week by asshole drivers.

HTRN; A buddy of mine that drives a Jeep Liberty was in a very similar accident. All of the other vehicles involved were cars, and all had to be removed from the scene via tow trucks. He drove away from it with little more than a few scratches and dents on the bumpers. I would love to own a larger vehicle for this very reason, especially with the retarded way that people drive around here.
Sadly, I can't afford the insurance on anything bigger right now :-/

Re: Post your gas Price..
I hate large vehicles.
Give me a nimble car with a good power/weight ratio and a 5spd and get the fk out of my way.
Sidenote: I hate SUV's.
