Auto-Mail!

Post by FireAza » Wed Aug 31, 2005 11:34 am

A Canadian scientist has invented a new type of prosthetic leg. Unlike passive prosthetics, this one is mechanical, which allows it to to more closely mimic the functions of the original limb. Link is HERE.
Somehow, I can't help but be reminded of the Auto-Mail prosthetics in Full Metal Alchemist:

this leg is really cool.
unlike the automail this leg does NOT link to the nerves but works on a mathematical algorithm predicting the wishes of the amputee by the movement of his hip...
really cool

Who's to say that in the future, that scientist doesn't watch Full Metal Alchemist and say "Hey! I could hook it up directly to the nerves!" that would be way more responsive then having a computer making guesses... The similarities in the design are rather striking, the fact that the model is also missing his left leg from above the knee just adds to it :P

a. I think that's a person with that leg, rather than a model...
b. ALOT of people are missing their leg above the knee...
c. people are already working on nerve based prosthetics, I've seen (on national geographic, or discovery, don't remember) a research that was made with a monkey...
first the tought a monkey to use a joystick to move a marker on the screen. then (after implanting nodes in it's brain) made the monkey move the marker, and taught the computer the brainwave action that was going on in the monkeys brain.
THEN they disconnected the joystick, and as the monkey moved it, the computer was moving a mechanical arm, moving the same way the marker moved on the screen !
and on the final stage they taught the monkey to move the arm. with no joystick !
linky!

a: He's still modelling it, ain't he? :P
b: True, but I just find it interesting it's the same leg in the same place. If he were missing his right leg, there'd be nothing to say.
c: MONKEYS!!! Er, what was this about again? Oh yeah, it's not quite the same, but it's close.

very cool. I wonder what kind of mathematical model they ended up with. The reference to AI in the leg sounds like they are using some kind of heuristical analysis, but something like forward kinematics could probably be adapted to this as well.

It's obviously just coincidence, but as I said above, I can't help but be reminded of Auto-Mail.

Awesome!

... I can't wait until they make mechanical spines, so I can just push a button and whirr, my neck and back are back in alignment and my headache goes away.

This is nifty, too.
