Comic for 10/06/05 - Stardate 59146.4

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Definitely not going to attempt to convince you to change your mind about the Cruiser, but I still hold the opinion that there are cars out there that I hate that other people like because we have different acceptance criteria. And frankly the car snob routine is annoying.
me: today is so weird. I feel so... directionless.

J: So this is more a scalar day than a vector day.

I'm hardly a car snob. I dislike the PT cruiser for very good reasons - I was willing to try it out when we went car shopping, as it DID fall in our price range. However, sitting in it, I found it to not work for me. I'm a tall guy - 6'3", and it felt tiny inside.

If I were a car snob, I'd turn my nose up at a car without giving a reason for it. But I stated my reasons for choosing the New Beetle very clearly, and made my case. Pardon me for being a comparison shopper, and knowing at least a small amount about cars. But I'm not going to sit by while someone bashes a good car for no reason.

[quote="Greg Dean";p="550211"]Now, not ALL New Beetles can have the sexyness of our 150-HP turbocharged engine, I realize. But having it makes ALL the difference. I haven't tested pure acceleration yet, (since I don't have a reliable place to do it and/or a good way to time myself) but I do know three things - I can get to 85 in third gear without redlining, I cruised at ~100 mph all the way down to Los Angeles at around 3000-3500 RPM's in 5th, and I got it up to 120 before I chickened out. The car could have kept going.

Add to this the fact that when we get a spare $350, we can get the engine chipped to up the available horsepower to a little over 200, bringing the top speed to somewhere around 160mph. What was that about underpowered?

Seriously - the acceleration in this thing is ginormous. It lags a little bit in low RPM's in first, but as soon as it gets to around 1500, it takes the fuck OFF. First car I've ever had that actually threw me into my seat during a hard acceleration - only other time I've felt that was in Jarrod's Camaro. (his still wins)

hell 150hp? I could get that by changing carbs in my dear old abused 240,, and that car is 21 years old. Not that age matters that much but the new beetle really need a heavy v8 version.

Oh - dreamriver - I just realized you thought I was talking to you. My response of "Nice try, but no" was to Jedit saying "1300cc, if it's the same as the original."

I need to start quoting more. I didn't even see your first post, dreamriver.

There's more to power than just raw horsepower. You have to take weight and torque into account as well. Sure, 150 HP might not seem like a lot, but in this particular car, it kicks a tremendous amount of ass.

Sure the new beetle moves, but so does all other new cars aswell, even the mini coopers moves.
but seriously, the engine choices for the new beetle is just underpowered for my taste.

:shifty: If I can find a cheap v8 conversion kit I'd buy a pink one.

could someone remind everyone to use this dateformat DD MONTH YYYY ?
I could, but I'm an American, so I do things the right way. Not the European way. The right way is MM/DD/YY. Sorry. :P

And Greg...
Underpowered? Are you used to corvettes or something?
Yes... yes I am. :P

I have no problems with the beetle's power, though. I can't help it. I think it's just a silly, unattractive car. But that's me. If you like it, more power to you.

Why can't everyone write the month out fully? Makes it so much easier on everyone.

THAT'S IT. No more arguing - from now on, the date must be posted in Stardate format. NO EXCUSES.
