Actually, I don't see how you can say that a 2 litre NA motor would only have 100 hp.. Like I said earlier, Toyota manages to pull 180 hp out of their 2ZZ-GE, which is a 1.8 litre... Honda's F20C in the S2000 makes 240 HP from a 2 litre. Hell, even in the old times Toyota pulled 145 hp out of the 18RG, which is a 2 litre from the 70's.
Maybe because the VW site says that the 1.9L VW Beetle has 100hp.

I've also owned 5 cars with small 4 cylinder engines. The engine sizes varied from 1.6L to 1.9L, and the horsepower ratings varied from 90 to 130HP. Doing the math shows that the engines averaged about 50 horsepower per liter.
Sure, there are exceptions to my rule of thumb, but without getting into performance boosts like extra valves or forced induction, but I'd bet that the rule holds true more often than not.

I'd say it's closer to 60HP or even 70HP for modern engines though (BHP).
By modern, I mean fuel-injected, dohc, four valve aluminum engines
Another consideration is that the North American versions of engines tend to be slightly lower powered (e.g., the Japanese direct injection version of the 1zz-fe has about 10HP more than the NA version since the gas over here isn't clean enough for DI).
If you start getting into multiple cams then 100 per litre isn't especially unusual of course.
In any case, the variance is very large since engines have improved over time to be more efficient. You can make a guess of the ballpark HP from displacement but it really is a futile gesture in general.

Maybe you should pay more attention and note that the 1.9 litre VW motor is their Diesel motor? Diesel's never have the same amount of HP that a gas motor has, diesel just isn't combustable enough for it. You'll also note that the 1.9 TDI has 180 ft lbs of torque, which is more than any of the gas engines I listed earlier.
And actually, on average, most 4 cylinder motors these days average about 65-70 hp/litre, but that's more of an economy thing than a lack of power. Even in your own example, the lowest HP/litre is 56, which makes your average of 50 a little inaccurate.

Oh yes, stating facts and showing contridictions in a person's own posting makes me a HUGE troll.

My Subaru, with the opposed-4, had the worst horsepower rating out of the bunch (well, except for the Pontiac 3.8L with an abysmal power/displacement ratio that I didn't even bother mentioning)
When I totalled it up and averaged it out, the exact ratio was 57 and some change. But that included one car that had DOHC, and it kind of throws the numbers off.
I made a generalization based on my experience, and everybody else wants to point out specific examples. Your examples, while being certainly true enough, can't change my experiences. Likewise, my experience is my own and doesn't really affect any of you.
I spoke out of turn in the first place, making a stupid comment, and I don't want to turn a comment about Greg's comics into a car debate thread (even though it's already started happening).
I like you guys, and don't want to fight, so let's just drop it, ok?
