Sometimes you can make some cash by bringing hard to get to recipies to the AH, but not when 45 other people are doing it. Deacon is right, as well as the guys advocating the two gathering professions. Not all greens are going to sell really though. Like the two-handed maul I found with +2 intellect. But someone might buy it to get a damage upgrade, who knows?
Engineering won't make much money either. You can sell some things (like guns, or mithril casings, other quest item stuff), but you end up selling crap to vendors alot while you are leveling your skill.

The plans, recipes, etc don't necessarily have to be hard to get to. You just have to take advantage of people who don't know about thottbot or who are lazy. For example, there is a thorium widget plan you get in Orgrimar for 1g or something like that. I can take that plan, put it on the AH for 5 or 6g, and walk away with some good profit.
I agree you can't be stupid about it, you would have to hold onto items if they are already on the AH in abundance, or you look before you import (Park an Alt at the AH).
I don't disagree that the gathering professions make money, its just easier/quicker for me to make a buck by running/flyign somewhere, pick up an item for 20s-1g50s (lower lvl money makin), and mark it up on the AH.

it's more of an aditional type money making scheme I guess; but well worth it. My main is a rogue, so I have Herbalism(for thistle tea and blinding powder), and i picked up mining for teh money.

Cool. I used to do herb/alchemy on my rogue, but switched to engineering. I like some of those gagdets too much, but I think that having a cheap supply of buffing pots might be more useful. I guess I could always eventually drop mining and take Alchemy.
