Underoos indeed.
I have a total of 6 white walls in my house. All the others now have wallpaper, paint, or bookshelves to remove the ugly color.
*waves* And hi all.

I think the previous owner of my house was some sort of ...do it yourself guy, all the walls were painted different colors (like blue and orange in the same room...) when I first saw the house. Then after we bought it, all the walls were white, but i'm too lazy to paint/decorate it :\ White makes me /sad face.

I just moved into an apartment with 3 of my friends. Every wal in the house is white... except my room. My walls have these really light purple swirls all over them. I didn't put em there, they were just there. Been a month and a half and Im still not sure if they're a good thing or not.

Wasn't it the 70's that had all the dark interiors and faux wood grain walls? I mean, I seem to recal that's when those interiors were built, even though we lived in them during the 80's.
Re: 10/20/05 Ooooh
As for me, I went from an apartment with all white walls to a house with things like lavendar walls and green floors, or one big olive wall with a brown floor. Everything. Is. Being. Painted. Blue.

We could always be like the Flanders'--- "Red room....red room....."
Though mayhaps that's only for the houses where horrible murders happened.
In any case, white represents like, purity/sterility/clean environment, so that's why hospitals and stuff are all white. Perhaps Kubrick envisioned the world of the future without dust? X.x

in don't really think there was any 80's architechture in Parkhill, the house i lived in was decorated in the 70's (wood paneling, linoleum floor in kitchen and bathroon, shag carpet, and pressed paper ceiling tile).
between 1984 and 1988, 4 houses were built in my neighborhood (plus a renovation of the one i lived in) the 4 houses were pretty modern looking, on the outside they were mainly vinyl sided with a front facade of brick and the interiors were all drywall walls and cielings, and the floors were either low to medium pile carpet or vinyl floor.
for the house i lived in we had taken off the back couple rooms and built a 2 floor +basement addition, the addition was built much like i had described with the other house, the front part was updated some, painted over the wood paneling, replaced the shag carpet with some medium pile, and covered the linoleum floor with vinyl tiles.
all in all don't think anything's really changed in the basic design of a house since those 4 i mentioned, people are basically limited to painting the drywall whichever color they want, i don't think anyone really does wallpaper anymore unless it's with those border strips that usually go along the tops of the walls.

I also just like the creativity homebuilders of the '80s showed. I grew up in a tri-level house in Sun River. (a little community in Rancho Cordova) You entered on the midlevel, and had a staircase up to the official second floor, and a half-staircase down to the living room and spare bedroom (and garage), and the dining area and kitchen were on entry level. The way it was laid out was very interesting and unique. Other examples of cool '80s houses are in movies - the house in E.T., for instance. You saw a lot of neat suburban places in the '80s movies. Hell, I saw a lot of them outside of the movies.
Nowadays, houses just seem uninspired to me. I dunno. *shrug*

Well it sorta depends. In high population density areas, builders are going for the "most room on the smallest lot" theory of design. This generally leads to the "basic box" school of design.
In alot of the NE, you're seeing alot of new construction in Victorian and Greek Revival styles in areas where there's money and lower population density.
Florida is starting to see a mini boom of Postmodern houses, particularly in the Northern part of the state.
Personally, I'm fond of Lodge style houses. Massive stone fireplaces, exposed beams, woodfloors and walls. And Elk horn chandeliers, musn't forget them.
To be honest, Architecture in the 80's wasn't terribly interesting for the most part. Now, you go back to the mid60's/early 70's... Wanna live in a Geodeosic dome?
Or how about the "villa" idea? where the house is a bunch of loosely connected buildings?

well i guess one of the houses i mentioned would be 80's architecture then as it was a quad level home, entry floor had kitchen and dining room, walk up a half-set of stairs and you have 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, walk down a half-set of stairs from entry and you have a living room, then walk down another half-set and get to the basement. i'm pretty sure it's the only house in town like that. i just never thought of that as being a distinct 80's thing as homes built in the 90's around here never seemed all that different than the other of those homes i mentioned, heck some homes built these days aren't much different either
duplexes on the other hand i've noticed a distinct change in design over the years in the 80's they were pretty straightforward symetrical with a wood and stucco, brick or aluminum siding exterior, and in the 90's they started being more staggered like one half would be like 2 feet forward compared to the other half and was either brick or vinyl sided, nowadays they're built like 2 different homes that are attached at the hip and mostly brick exteriors
