That's California for you. I live in SoCal (the nice part of Anaheim) and we have a 1055 sqft 2bd/1 1/2 bth two story townhouse with a patio/small backyard and we pay $1330 (after the 15 dollar pet rent!) for it, and that's a steal here!

In Oklahoma my dad had a 3 bd/2bth 1500 or so sq ft rock house with a fireplace, 5 acres or so of land and he paid 500 a month. But Oklahoma is a cess pool so you really get what you pay for.
Oklahoma is beautiful I dont think you know what the hell you are talking about.
That's odd, because I consider California a cesspool, both of the human and geographical (with some exceptions...the north part) variety.

Considering that Jez grew up there, I think she knows what she's talking about.

I wouldn't want to live in Oklahoma either, and I'm in Upstate NY. All the taxes and none of the entertainment of NYC.

NYC is a great place to live, if you have money, and I mean MONEY.

As for the "entertainment" of Manhattan - I haven't been there in 4 years.

What about Oklahoma makes it a cess pool?

Yeah, I lived in Oklahoma for 15 years, I think I 'know what the hell I'm talking about'. It's a boring shitty place full of boring and shitty people. Saying it is a cess pool is not saying it isn't beautiful because it can be -especially in winter and fall-, but the fact that it's full of conservative republican southern bapists and the lack of anything even mildly amusing to do doesn't make up for the beauty. California may be expensive but it's also very beautiful here, there's always something to do, and the weather is perfect most of the time. This is part of the reason that rent is so high, everyone wants to move here and there's good reason for that.

That being said, I plan on moving to either Texas or Chicago sometime within the next few years ago just because the expense doesn't justify the benefits of living here to me, but all the cheap rent in the world couldn't get me to move back to Oklahoma.

Go go knee jerk defensive responses!

HTRN, come to Upstate NY and spend a few years. Just seeing some of the crazy people walking the streets is a million times more entertaining than anything around here.

Prices in areas vary quite a bit, we are buying a house for $80,000 in Peoria, it is all brick 2 bedroom, all hardwood floors, full nearly finished basement, 1360 square ft. If the same house were in the town I live it now it would probably cost $130,000, but if it were an hour south in the capital it would probably cost $65,000. Chicago would probably have it even more inflated than in the small towns outside Peoria.
It's all about supply and demand, there are Jobs here so there are more people that want to work here so there are more people that want to live here. A town of under 15,000 people (where I live now) has a lot less places available and people are willing to pay extra for the small town atmosphere and nonexistent crime. In Peoria there are a lot more houses available and more crime, so it's not as costly to buy a house there. In Springfield almost all jobs are through the state, which is currently broke, so there are less people looking to move there hence lower house prices.

Of course none of this really has to do with renting but it goes by the same principles.

You are completely right on that part. I don't know what part of Oklahoma you lived in but most the people here arent anymore shitty than the rest of the world. On a the flip side people in Oklahoma are more friendly and care more for there fellow man than any other place I know.

In Oklahoma I can hold the door open for someone and I get a thank you. In NYC I hold the door open for someone and they either think I'm a door man or trying to rob them. Sad very sad.

I grew up in Sapulpa (suburb of Tulsa) and spent my last few years living in Tulsa. People are more friendly there as a general rule, but considering that a great majority of the state are conservative republican southern bapists makes them pretty difficult to tolerate even if they are friendly on the surface. The hatred that they spew both politically and socially disgusts me.

Ok I wasnt thinking about that portion of the state. The Tulsa area blows big time.

Consider who you're talking to - my idea of "good time" involves things like welding torches and firearms, something the overregulated City of New York takes a dim view on, for the most part.

And yeah, the nutcases walking the streets are fun, until they stab you with a screwdriver for beaming "thoughtwaves" into their heads.

As for Upstate NY, I used to LOVE spending summers in Greenville NY.

We're currently renting a 3bdrm/2bath house on 2 acres with horse stalls and an arena for $600 per month. That's in Pueblo, CO. In Phoenix our 2 bdrm apartment normally went for $900.

I still can't imagine paying $1000 for a studio though. Especially in CA. Then again, I have NO desire to ever go to CA for any reason.

Before you think Florida is a good deal to live at, Mouse Country and all, lemme enlighten you about pricing there.

A few years ago, a basic house in my home town was $50,000.
Right now, the same house is up to $200-300 thousand. For a bare-bones house. I'm not kidding either. :o
Some people believe that the hurricanes caused the jump, and it's probably true. But hurricanes alone couldn't have done that much of a leap... am I right? :|
