the radio show thing

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Don't forget to have the time setting saved in a cookie if possible.
Or at least allow for (and therefore allow bookmarking of) a GET variable, that is to say something like this:
schedule.html?tz=-1
Remembering that + would have to be url-escaped (%2B) or else more simply left out entirely.

Haha, DJ Remy apparently lives close to me. He also looks strangely familiar. I'm going to be freaked out if he is someone I know...it wouldn't be the first time I've met someone in real life then found out I knew [or knew of] them online.

OK, new version using the new backdrops is available here, however you should immediately notice a problem with it:

While Greg did resize the boxes to be consistant with each other, the space between grid lines is, unfortunately, some fractional pixel value. (31.whatever) Now I could try and keep guessing until I hit it, or I could just redraw the grid so that each hour is 32 pixels tall, or I could make Greg do it. :)

There are still a few issues with it, but overall, it looks pretty much correct, and works in the latest versions of IE, Firefox, and Opera. It won't work for anyone using a version of IE prior to 5.5, because IE didn't even add half-assed PNG support until 5.5.

dmpotter - I'll do it as soon as I get home, and give you the updated background. When you implement it, can you make it so that the grey background is set to a transparency color?

(Oh, and in case you were'nt aware - YOU ARE THE FUCKING MAN. That is all.)

New backdrop can be found at http://www.reallifecomics.com/backdrop.gif .

Well, I'm in the process of uploading a new version that basically finishes off what I'm doing (although my FTP clients seems to have flaked out, yay) - this one should solve some problems with IE being annoying and adds "(Continued)" to the bottom of split shows. (It also now squishes the title if it doesn't fit.)

I'm not sure what you mean by "so that the grey background is set to a transparency color"? The current backdrop is a transparent color, it's just over a <div> with the background color set to match the current schedule page on radio.reallifecomics.com. (And, yes, I'm aware that's actually a gradient there, I just picked a middle gray for comparison purposes.)

Edit: OK, FTP process unflaked-out, and the new backdrop is up. At some point when I get the chance I'll look into implementing your suggestions BtEO, it shouldn't be that hard.

AAAAAH. I see. Didn't know how you had it set up. Basically, once it's in a working state, (perhaps even this afternoon) I'd like to put it up on the radio site in place of the current schedule, and start using this system to add shows and whatnot. It means I don't have to open up Illustrator anymore. :)

When you're done, hop on AIM or send me a PM so we can talk about migrating it. :) Thanks man!

I should send you the GIMP script-fu script that I used to generate the titles, then, just 'cause Scheme is an awful, awful programming language. (Sorry, MIT, it just is.)

Anyway, I'm heading home now, so I'll be away from the Internet for a while.

Since I realised my suggestions about storing the GMT offset are redundant (I should have thought of that way of doing things sooner) might I pop up with another, far more useful suggestion:

Adding title attributes to the links. For those times when the text is all squished.

Scheme is TERRIBLE. Whoever says it isn't needs to be shot.

Scheme is not a programming language -- it is a text representation of an abstract syntax tree!

And as such, it is in fact not that terri- *SHOT*
perl -e 'print "Just another Perl ${\(trickster and hacker)},";'

The Sidhekin proves that Sidhe did it!

Done.

[quote="mvang0009";p="569764"]Adelaide for example is one of those "wierd ones" we're offset half hour. GMT+9:30

:Sounds of destruction:

Well, I tried that on the new image version, and it sort of works. It'll work in Firefox and Opera just fine, it gets kinda screwy in IE though since it's missing images.

However when a show is split such that only a half-hour is left on a new day, the name gets squished entirely. But you've now got a GMT+9:30 and GMT+10:30 option.

Might want to make it such that rather than squish the name, it would truncate it... at the very least, people could see the first few words of a show title, and could click it.

Let me know what we'd need to do to get this rolling on the main page - I've got some shows I'd like to add, but I want to do it on this schedule instead of the old one. :)

(Any updates, we can make later - this version works well enough for the time being to replace the original. :) )

Just had a thought about the whole people wanting to call in for the chat shows and the such. Has anyone considered using Skype? I used to use that quite a bit when I was at uni to chat to friends over the summer.

http://www.applian.com/ has Replay Radio for the live show (and has scheduling) [To moderator, Applian has CJ affilliates. If you want to make that a link, hit it!]

http://radio.about.com/cs/recordingstreams/ has lots of resources for capturing streams.
This post may self destruct if the moderators determine that recording the stream would not be in the best interests of RL.

Yay, finally got some free time!

Essentially all you should need to do is replace the existing <img> and <map> with:

Code: Select all

<div id="scheduleTable"><div id="loadingShadow">LOADING...</div><div id="loadingMain">LOADING...</div></div>
Then copy/include the CSS rules defined in schedule2.css over to the existing stylesheet. (I'd suggest copying, because you don't want the body rule.)

Then add the following to the <HEAD>:

Code: Select all

 <script type="text/javascript" src="schedule2.js"></script>
 <script type="text/javascript" src="rlradio.js"></script>
 <!--[if gte IE 5.5000]>
 <script language="JavaScript">
   USE_IE_FILTERS = true;
 </script>
 <![endif]-->
Then, somewhere, you need the following <form>:

Code: Select all

<form name="tmzform" method="get" action="schedule.html">
<p>Select Timezone: <select id="tmzoff" onchange="changeOffset(this.value)">
<option value="12">GMT+12</option>
<option value="11">GMT+11</option>
<option value="10.5">GMT+10:30</option>
<option value="10">GMT+10</option>
<option value="9.5">GMT+9:30</option>
<option value="9">GMT+9</option>
<option value="8">GMT+8</option>
<option value="7">GMT+7</option>
<option value="6">GMT+6</option>
<option value="5">GMT+5</option>
<option value="4">GMT+4</option>
<option value="3">GMT+3</option>
<option value="2">GMT+2</option>
<option value="1">GMT+1</option>
<option value="0">GMT</option>
<option value="-1">GMT-1</option>
<option value="-2">GMT-2</option>
<option value="-3">GMT-3</option>
<option value="-4">GMT-4</option>
<option value="-5">GMT-5</option>
<option value="-6">GMT-6</option>
<option value="-7">GMT-7</option>
<option value="-8" selected="selected">GMT-8</option>
<option value="-9">GMT-9</option>
<option value="-10">GMT-10</option>
<option value="-11">GMT-11</option>
<option value="-12">GMT-12</option>
<option value="-13">GMT-13</option>
<option value="-14">GMT-14</option>
</select>
<input type="hidden" name="usetmz" value="yes">
</form>
Finally just add "buildSchedule()" to the <body onload=""> tag, and it should be all set.
