Final Practicum (Mock Surgery exam)--PASSED!

Post by NotQuiteDead » Mon Jan 02, 2006 11:58 pm

One of the last big hurdles towards my goal was just crossed today--I passed my 'mock surgery' exam. Now I will be able to start scrubbing cases (start that on the 18th), God help us all.... I don't know where my first clinical site will be yet, but I'm hoping for one of the big hospitals in the area. I'm just so glad I passed this damn thing--this is the end of six months of labs, lectures, etc....one step closer to being a Surgical Technologist. :)

(forgive the blog-ishness, just wanted to spread some good news.)

Wow, congratulations! How much more work do you have until you become a Surgical Technologist?

What exactly is a Surgical Technologist, then? I'm guessing it's a little like an anesthetist versus an anesthesiologist, but I don't really know.

bambi38, I have six more months of clinical site experience--I have to log 500 contact hours of OR time. I'll rotate through three different sites before I'm done and graduated in July.

Deacon, surgical technologists are the surgeon's second pair of hands, basically. We pass instruments, maintain the sterility of the area around the patient, assist with prepping+draping, load medications to be used, etc. There's a website here that explains just about everything (head to 'The Profession' tab).
