...which is?
Sticking with the 'official' repositories and not going beyond what the distribution knows [not thinks, knows] you want. It tends to explode if you switch to other repositories.

What are these "repositories" to which you refer?

The list of URLs Debian/Ubuntu machines use to download & install packages.

But if he's using it as a live-cd, which seems to be the case, why would he bother downloading and installing packages?

Because Live CDs can't contain all the software in the world. I am often using apt-get when using Ubuntu-Live because it is missing something I need to use.

And because it is installed to a RAM-disk I have to use it even more often.

I thought the idea of most live-cds was to either a) give the user a taste of what Linux is like without having to install it on the computer, or b) serve a specific task, usually as a sort of recovery disc. If you know what you need it for, why not preload it with the necessary applications?

Cause even if you know linux you can't install it on every single computer you ever encounter. And I'm too lazy to remaster a Live CD.

Maybe he wants a media player that wasn't designed by and for idiots [*coughBMPxcough*].

Maybe he wants Konqueror for some reason [should use KUbuntu in that case, cos installing a lot of KDE crap to your RAM is a mo'fucking stupid idea].

You never know. :P

Aerdan, as a xubuntu user (xfce4 + ubuntu) with konqueror as my file manager and all sorts of unofficial repos in my sources.list, I never have any of these problems you speak of...

The ubuntu I'm talking about uses a Gnome interface, and no, I'm not using a live-cd. I'm trying to set up a dedicated Linux computer in my house, mainly with the goal of educating myself.

By the way, I did lspci and the sound card shows up as this:

Rockwell International: Unknown Device 4310

The ethernet card is recognized, I think there's something else I'm doing wrong when I'm trying to configure the connection.

That doesn't really help us if you're trying to get support with your network card and not your sound card.

As for xubuntu, that's probably because the people who do xubuntu aren't dumbarses like the KUbuntu and general Ubuntu crowd.

Aerdan, The main reason for me going with *ubuntu (or any Debian based distro for that matter...and Debian itself always hates me, so I never managed to get that working) is that it works with my wireless card...

...I heard recently (from the Gentoo forums) that Gentoo now has decent support (it's a Linksys WPC11 v3 using one of the Prism chipsets), so I might give it another whirl later on when I get some free time to go through the "interesting" install process...

I bet Gentoo compiles pretty swiftly on an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ :)
