SLi confusion...

Post by Kurosen » Fri Jan 20, 2006 9:26 pm

ok, so im thinking about upgrading my system... so far im looking into the SLi direction, but i cant seem to figure this out...

ive pretty much decided on a motherboard/processor, but its the video card that seems to toss a curve ball...

from past reading, i remember that you needed to connect the 2 video cards with a SLi connector...

but while looking at video cards i found one like this

im just wondering how the sli w/ that kind of card works... is it the same but w/out the connector? also, is there any bennifit to the ones w/ the connector?

thanks

I know it's says otherwise, but I have a gut feeling that that is not an SLi card...

My bad, the two 6600LEs can SLI using the PCIe BUS, ie without the SLi bridge...

For real? Interesting... Normally I would've said that they may have provided the wrong picture.

while im here i might as well ask this as well...

if ive got 2 cards, but play a game that doesnt have SLi support (came out before it or w/e), is it going to be utilized at all? or can it?

They comunicate over the PCIe bus. Yes its the same but without the connector. No there are no benifits to ones with the connector.

Dont buy SLI yet. Wait, wait, wait!

From the looks of things, ATI's CrossFire is a better duel-card option. For one, you don't have to buy the exact same card like you do with nVidia's SLI and all 3D games work with CrossFire (SLI has a database of games which a game need to be programmed into for SLI to work). And as SunTzu said in "The Art of War":

At present, a faster (and often cheaper) solution to slow performance is to buy a powerful single video card.

I'm starting planning for the construction of a big system in a few months. Still debating whether to go with a dual-card setup, or grab a single ubercard.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

Take a single übercard, then install another one when the price is right and you need the power.

That's what I did. Got a 7800GT (yay for factory overclock and copper hsf!) and will simply add another later on down the line when they're not as uber but can still give a shot in the arm.

IMO thats what SLI is good for. Very, very few people need 2 top of the line GPUs designed for gaming (mostly, atleast). If you really need high end graphics for your work, there are loads of better choices out there that are aimed directly for what you need it for.

Well, if you have a 24-inch or 30-inch LCD display, running games at those native resolutions can drive even the most stoic video card to drink.

ya... my plan was to get 1 card (probably not an uber one, but something around the 6800 mark) and then just add another one down the road when needed...

any idea when ati will start all their crossfire stuff?

Yeah, but as has been covered before, the stronger card will be limited to the capabilities of the weaker. Wow, some advantage that is
and all 3D games work with CrossFire (SLI has a database of games which a game need to be programmed into for SLI to work).
*sniff sniff*

Hmmm...are we near a dairy farm?
