If they were trainers, (or 'sneakers', if you will), I'd just chuck 'em into the washing machine but I'm not sure that's the best idea for rubber beach flip-flops

Well, they're rubber, so they should come clean with something like Fairy Liquid. That, or it'll eat clean through them.
Mind you, rubber is oil-based. Could try 3-in-one oil. At the very least, it'll leave them smelling not of old feet, but of bike chain.
