Greg's Computer Problems

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

One way to test, pop another cpu from a diff pc into it. That should tell you.

If it's 6 years old, it's highly unlikely that they have another CPU to test, unfortunately. Best bet at this point is to pop the HD out of it and into Liz's computer to recover the files.

I suggested that, but my Sony-made computer fears for its life when Greg gets near it. =)

about a month after i upgraded my computer to a PIII mobo and CPU (about 5 years ago)i had that exact same problem, fans and lights would come on but drives wouldn't and it wouldn't POST, even after making sure all the parts were seated properly. ended up putting the old PII hardware back in and took the PIII back to the store i bought it from, the next day i get a call from the store asking me why i brought the mobo/cpu back, apparently they put it together to see what was wrong and it booted up just fine.
what i would suggest to greg is take the computer apart, then rebuild it, you never know, it might work

"Tonight, I back up everything onto a DVD, and copy the source files back over to my laptop so I can get some work done."

First smart thing Greg has said in a long time. =p After all my years of working with devs and authors, Ive seen HD crashes on them with all data lost.. no backups etc..

Kega by Steve Snake was one of them.

I mean keeping regular backups is vital! Good to hear this was done now. ;) Would hate to lose RLC

I told him to back those up almost 2 years ago! Now that he has almost lost everything, he realizes that he actually needs to listen to me once in awhile!

Meh, it wouldn't have mattered anyway, a CD burned two years ago will have long since rotted into CRC errors. :P

(And I'm only half kidding. )

Actually depends on which brand you buy. TDK, Memorex and Sony brand media actually stays saved quite well. Never had a issue on those. Also keep them out of direct sunlight.. Ive noticed that can discolor them and also kill the cds crc as you said.
