Live CD - How they can save your data.

Post by jolly_fat_man » Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:01 pm

I've read about Greg and his near encounter with suicidal computer so I decided to post about Live CDs and the way they can save your data.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/

It's also a good way to check how bad the problems are.
Ubuntu Linux just because it supports loads of things out of the box.

Starts up with loads of programs and a graphical appearance instead of Command Line which would cramp some peoples style.

Although some basic knowledge of your networks might be required if you don't own a USB disk drive, or multiple CD or DVD drives; since that would mean you need to plug in your network cable(if not plugged in already) and connect to your network. This is done during configuration, before you even start the system up.
Sometimes the auto-config fails, like on mine with my wireless card and ethernet card which gives pre-disposition to ethernet and I have to configure my wireless afterwards.

USB disk drives are plug-and-play as well as CD/DVD.

For those of you who have Windows Shares on your network...
You can try to save your files there, but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. Of course you can try to share your busted computers hard drive.
That should be fairly easy as there is a button on the system menu that does just that.

Of course if you don't mind learning command line you can try R.I.P.

http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robo ... linux/rip/
Of course you don't have to download a full CD here, but almost nothing is plug-and-play.

Problem: Computer won't make it to POST.
Solution: Run a LiveCD.

Anyone else see the problem with this concept?

Not me.

Oh and by the way Knoppix is way better for a PC that needs to be resurrected. There is also BartPE my second fav.

Let's put it this way. How do you plan on making the computer boot off a CD?

HINT: It doesn't get far enough through the boot process to enter BIOS setup.

If the concept is to run Ubuntu on Liz's machine, that's just as silly, since presumably her machine works fine, as evidenced by Greg being able to post using it.

Yeah Knoppix has a few more tools than Ubuntu Live does. That doesn't mean Ubuntu is usless though.

Any I only use BartPE when I have a NTFS partition that needs to be written too and I can't get captiventfs working.

Slightly off topic, but it was mentioned, so I'll clarify for those who don't know but might need to.

Mounting a windows share over the network via Linux:

(This is how I do it. Works in most cases, but not all)

mount -t smbfs //windows-computer-name/sharename /path/to/mountpoint -o username=windows-username

Now, obviously, /path/to/mountpoint must already exist. A good location to choose, /mnt/

You can temporarily create a location here using mkdir. example: mkdir /mnt/temporary

Then you would substitute that into your mount command instead of what I have used above.

The windows-username will of course be your username on the windows machine you are sharing from.

This is a nice way to copy over data on a dieing system, as it works over the network, you don't need NTFS read/write support in your Linux distirbution. The remote computer handles all of this.

Umm did you not get the sarcasm from the laugh after I said not me?

I was in no way stating that Ubuntu was useless. I was using Ubuntu before I even knew about Knoppix. I really like Ubuntu, I do.

Nah, I'm just a fan of Russ Lieber, so your Stephen Colbert quote offends me.

Now to see how many people try to point out that the Russ Lieber character is fictional, and looks supiciously like a character on Arrested Development.

I remembered that other people that don't have a dead motherboard, and just a windows registry problem they can't solve might be able to solve that problem by using Live CDs as a recovery tool.

What exactly is the command in Linux to do that?
