So why isn't Greg in trouble for not wearing his chef's hat?

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

That's the kind of hat you're supposed to wear. I have no idea what that squishy looking one (see today's strip) is supposed to accomplish.

The caps that the students wear are skull caps and not the "baker hat" that we have all come to know as a chef hat. The skull cap is really tight, so there won't be any lost hair. Its probably more useful than the huge hats the teachers wear. Those just look silly.

At WCI our nametags were also our electronic keys into the building and elevators. So not only did our chef instructors hate us for not having them we had to wait around doors till other students walked by.

In a city that rains as much as Portland that often sucked... a lot.

Why, exactly, would you need more than one name tag? I just kept mine in my toolkit and pinned it to whichever jacket I was wearing for class.

Mostly because they get:

Washed
Dropped
Lost
Mangled
Bent (the pins, can't use mags in this situation)
Left-at-home-on-the-dresser-where-it-was-taken-off-the-night-before-but-forgotten-at-5am-leaving-for-class-still-asleep

Again, I remove mine when I'm not wearing it and keep it in my toolbox. =P

I wouldn't use the magnets anyways. The pins were mysteriously half as expensive.

Though I ended up going through two anyways... USED to pin it to my PDA pouch when I wasn't using it. That worked out well until I lost the damn PDA on the bus... =(

I agree, you shouldn't be wearing your nametag off campus/office (security/safety thing).

But then again, your not supposed to wear your jacket off campus either. Too many do.

The others are spares, just given to you up front so you can loose two before you have to buy another one. Of course, little ole me, I have two nametags and when I lost one, I'd get a replacement backup. Little anal in that area, but when you have to have one, I'd rather deal with it up front that wear someone else's nametag.

I wear my jacket off campus, but I always take off my hat , cravat, and towels. My main justification is that I don't have stuff to change into, and I look absolutely terrible without the jacket on in just my undershirt. Since I wash every uniform I use anyway, I use it for what it is - it's a work outfit. It's not like it's some military uniform or something - it's a smock. To treat it otherwise is silly.

I not talking about 'respect' or any bullshit like that. I'm talking about the same ServeSafe class that you just took. Your jacket is a food surface and wearing it on the street to school is making it unsanitary. If your going to wash it at the end of the day it doesn't matter what you do when you leave. So thats fine.

If your riding to school, your at least wearing something else OVER your jacket right?

Ah - okay - I wasn't sure what you meant. Someone else was talking about leaving school in it the other day, and respect and all that crap. I gave them my spiel too.

Yeah, I'm usually wearing a jacket in the morning - it's fsk'n COLD in the city! :D

I alwasy look at it this way...

If they could, I'm sure the school would ENCOURAGE you to wear your jackets around. You'd be a walking billboard. LOL

Since they can't get away with that, it should be taken more seriously than many students do.

Did your Uncle offer any more clues?

hi i go to school at Atlantic Culinany Academy in Dover New Hampshire and im 6 months in the program. They started to do the same things with our uniforms. I got in with the last class to not have to get the name tags. The only thing i like about the name tag is that you look the same everyday. I have 3 uniforms with my name on it and 2 without and it dose not look professional to walk in to class or be seen by the geusts with out the name on it. Also nutrition for us was all power point it sucked. and the sanitation certification is easy my test only had 2 questions about the bacteria, virus and that stuff. Most of it was common sence.
