Actually, as long as you stick the center of the paved areas, it's really not that bad. Wander off into the dirt, and you're going to have to start worrying far more. There's this one Russian or Ukrainian (I forget, now) lady who takes motorcycle rides through the area and snaps pictures and such, taking a geiger counter with her and documenting the results.
Kidd of speed was proven to be a hoax though. Elena's father isn't some nuclear scientist. She didn't ride a motorcycle through the town. The radiation levels as you approach the dirt aren't as she claims. Regular tours take place (that she and her husband went on).

Just thought I'd point that out ;).
Indeed. It was proven a hoax. The site is still around, but they changed it. It now says that 'it was all told to the webmaster' like it is. Somewhere, while researching kidd of speed, I found a review with the tour master that they went with. She was livid.

Those pictures are fascinating. I would love to be able to make my work in such a significant place like that.
There's your answer, fishbulb.

There are more if you want to do more googling, but those should be more than enough.
IIRC, such a suit does not exist.
I'm sure theres a suit that can protect you from radiation. Maybe not 100% of it.. but there has to be one... right?
Sigh....

"radiation" is a broad term. The problem is that the area he wants to visit will fry electronics in seconds, so no, a suit isn't acceptable. For example, check out last month's Popular Mechanics for a cool spread on how they used a modified bomb-squad robot to retrieve a radioactive piece that alone was strong enough to give the robot only about 30 seconds of operation before it had to be pulled out by a tether and repaired.
