It has not been enforced in sometime. I know this because I grew up in Alabama. There is still a lot of segregation in the South though. It is more self imposed than legally imposed. If a black couple moves into a predominantly white neighborhood, they will be "run" out. Same goes for a white couple who moves into a predominantly white neighborhood. I remember there being this big deal out of the local school district suddenly redefining school boundries and zoning to "just by chance" exclude a black family from the school district. Everyone knew why they did it, it was really messed up. That is one unfortunate thing about Birmingham at least.

Interacial couples are often not treated nicely while in public in Birmigham. People don't go out of there way to insult them, but they stare and jeer, especially when it is a white woman and a black man. My parents fliiped when in high school I was dating a black guy, they were seriously worried about us getting hurt physically by it. There was even a lawsuit a while back about an interacial couple not being allowed to attend the prom. The south sucks... I haven't seen that kind of racial profiling and the like anywhere else I have gone...

"The South" is a pretty broad target to be firing at, don't you think? And you're going to tell me that if I try to move to Compton, it will be no big deal?

Generally speaking, the south has major racial issues. That does not mean other parts of the country are sparkling points of perfect racial harmony. It also does not mean that certain areas of the south have great intergration and acceptance of all races. However, for the most part, the states that were part of the confederacy are now largely racist.

re·peal Audio pronunciation of "repealed" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (r-pl)
tr.v. re·pealed, re·peal·ing, re·peals

1. To revoke or rescind, especially by an official or formal act.
2. [Obsolete]. To summon back or recall, especially from exile.

So? I knew what it mean't.

Why was it repealed? No one was following it, and repealing it had no effect on the state at all. Why repeal any laws at all? Every un-enforced law is a precedent to point to when I break an enforced law.

I found northern states I have been to JUST as racist as any southern state I have been to. And northerners were FAR more snobbish towards me and my friends (some of whom are black) then I have ever seen a southerner act toward someone from up north.

What the hell does the Confederacy have to do with racism? Barely anything. So please make sure you are pushing your views, and label them as such, before saying something like 'Generally speaking' please.

That's not racism then, that's snobbyness towards southerners, who they automatically percieve to be rednecks, which is another problem entirely.

Which is why I addressed it seperately.

You addressed it right in between two sentences about racism, so I'm sorry but it kind of seemed like you were addressing them together, or something.

No offense, but I'd rather trust weight of evidence over your opinions. Southerners were the last to get desegregated, the fiery holdouts against the civil rights movement. Racism in the South is a deep-rooted cultural practice than the last 30 years has dented but not destroyed. The Confederacy has a ton to do with racism; the whole idea was of white land and slaveowners. That's what set them apart from us, the major cultural and economic divide that was best shown by attitudes surrounding the Civil War.
You're deliberately ignoring the accepted wisdom on the subject in favor of 'pushing your own views'. Relying on personal experience to stereotype out a quarter of the country is kind of a bad call, your personal biases do not translate into fact or evidence. Sorry.

That needs a little more definition, but it's true "the south" was less ashamed about and subtle with its racism, not hiding it behind self-righteous appearances that must be kept up, and was involved in far less patronization. If you honestly believe 1850's-era northern states held up blacks as equals, you really, really need to go back and study history a little more throughly, preferably with a professor less interested in dates and rote recitation of factoids and more interested in the realities that generated and cause those factoids. As far as today is concerned, I'm not convinced I couldn't take a drive up the eastern seaboard, stop anywhere randomly, and shake a stick without hitting three or four racist people.

You might want to look into that whole "Civil War" and "Confederacy" thing. It was far broader and more complex than you seem to realize.
You're deliberately ignoring the accepted wisdom on the subject in favor of 'pushing your own views'.
Actually, I'm not sure "the accepted wisdom" is really all that great an argument for you to be making against him, here. The reality of it is that you're actually the one 'pushing your own views' against historical fact.

Do you realize how your statements are self-referential?
