Need a New Author

Post by GageEndal » Wed Jun 07, 2006 5:16 am

I just finished reading all of my books (again) and I need help finding a new author. Here are the autors I have in my collection that I've read all of their books.

David Eddings
Robin Hobb
David Coe
Terry Brooks

These are the kinds of authors I like. The ones that are just really funny about how they present their characters and how they like to smack you in the face with it. I really don't want any big mainstream authors because the other ones like Piers Anthony just don't do it for me.

If anyone knows a nice non-mainstream author who I could find at Bookmans or Borders I would really be a big fan. Thanks!
Who do you think this is?

Well if you dont' know, I'm not gonna' tell you!

Terry Goodkind if you're into the good ol' Swords 'n' Sorcery stuff. I'm also a big fan of Robert Silverberg's Majipoor series. I've heard that some of Tad Williams' stuff is pretty good. And you can't go wrong with R. A. Salvatore or Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for DnD novels.

Was gonna mention Goodkind, but also on the "Terry" trail is Pratchet.
McCaffrey is good, but prolly too mainstream for ye...

yeah, just experiment. Try grabbing some anthology books (thge "legends" series, and the "Year's Best SciFi" series are great for discovering authors you haven't read yet.)

Oh good god, Goodkind is horrible. :x

Now if you want a Terry who's got a sense of humor and a lot of good ideas and a flair for good storytelling and did I mention a great sense of humor?

Terry Pratchett is your man.

To each his own, Fuggle. I liked Goodkind more than, say, Robert Jordan. However, both of their series lose steam after the first few books.

Hmm to post or not to post.....
Now I don't know any Terry authors but might I recommend Jonathan Kellerman?
In my opinion, he's a great horror novelist. Even Stephen King can't stop reading his books.

Well, King's gotta get all those crappy ideas somewhere.

Robert Jordan's series died after the third book ... but before that, at least he had some good ideas. Goodkind, though? His characters are boring, one-dimensional, and morally shallow ... his plotting is pedestrian ... he's all but wholly derivative ... and his attempts at working Ideas into his text would laughable if not headache-inducingly ridiculous and he wasn't beating you over the head with them. The only reason I even finished Wizard's First Rule is because it takes something worse than that pile of shite to make me give up on a book.

Ahem.

Oh yeah, and Goodkind himself is a zealous ass with too much ego and too little intelligence.

On that point I will agree with you.

Well you may have a point there but Jonathan Kellerman is still a good author.

Raymond Feist is good for at least one book (that being all I've read, but I did like it)

George R.R. Martin, R.A.Salvatore (own all the Dark Elf books), Marion Zimmer Bradley, and David Farland are also some good authors who are all on my bookshelf. :)

You don't want any mainstream authors because you dislike some? That's awfully closed-minded of you. What if some of the mainstream authors are also good writers? You'd be missing out on some good reading simply because you don't want to seem trendy(which itself is starting to become the trendy attitude).

Sir Spankspeople, I only say that I don't want mainstream because I've read most of them. I read one of the Goodkind books and had to put down the gun slowly within twenty minutes.

I did try to pick up 1984 last night... if I hear one more metaphor I'm going to hurl that book into the fireplace, right next to the Goodkind.

I'm also one of those shallow people who judges books by their cover and by their first page. That's what hooked me with those other authors. If you can get a reader on the first page, they will stay for the whole thing. To be honest I only read Goodkind because I was in basic training and my Drill Sergent said I could read it. I guess he didn't like me.

I printed out a list of all of the books you guys said and I'm gonna hit Borders tonight after class. I should be able to find at least one good book from the list I'm sure. I'm really picky about what I read and I don't like dime-a-dozen authors ((coughmccaffycough)) and the like. But that's just a personal thing.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I knew this would be a good place to get a good book and hear some people flame on about books and authors.
Who do you think this is?

Well if you dont' know, I'm not gonna' tell you!
