And New Years

And Easter

And any birthday

And any other occasion when large groups of my family are congregated. Gotta love 'em
We lost, but We may yet have a chance if we score big with Croatia, and Brazil does crappily with Japan...
Top two teams go though. While Brazil have now almost certainly got the top spot, you need only draw with Croatia and hope Japan doesn't beat Brazil. Given your performance against Brazil I'd still call that a good chance.

Also, yours and Brazil's matches are played on the 22nd.
Alright. You know what? Shove it up your asses, FIFA.

The United States brought a futbol team to the World Cup. Not an army. Not President Bush. We don't deserve this shit. It's classless.
Dude, the US lost to the Czech Republic. Not lost as in "well, that was a good game, both teams played hard but only one managed to pull it off," lost as in "wow, they just got their asses handed to them."

Now the US isn't officially out of the running yet, assuming they can obliterate Ghana (to make up for the 0-3 loss) and that the Czech Republic loses horribly to Italy.

Except that the US tied Italy and lost horribly to the Czech Republic, and the Czech Republic was shutout by Ghana. My prediction is that the US wins the trifecta of failure and gets shutout by Ghana and goes home secure in the knowledge that they are one of the worst football/soccer teams in the world.

They won CONCACAF. That's worth noting, because it has never happened before. Oh, and they came in ranked #5 in the world. After 2002's quarterfinal appearance, this team was poised to be the best US Soccer Team in history. They simply are NOT one of the worst in the world. Thus, tying Italy despite being a man down.

The Czech Republic, if you were wondering, came into the World Cup ranked #2 in the world, for various reasons. #2. Of course, it must take a joke of a futbol team to lose to the best national team that side of Brazil. Not saying they played well, they didn't. But they are by no means anywhere NEAR the worst in the world.

Rebounding from an early Italian goal, to tie and have several chances to WIN that game, that's worth taking note.

They tied off an Italy own-goal. The US never scored in that match. Yeah, that's a great showing.

The Cid, it's football not futball.

Scotland didn't even qualify, yet you don't hear us claiming Racism, anti-Scottish feelings or politics, as you have.
We just admit we're shit, and get one with it, so why can't you?

How the U.S. ever got ranked fifth, I'll never know.

No, it's futbol. I'll give you an example: Malcolm Glazer owns both a Football team (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and a Futbol team (Manchester United Soccer Club).

And I told you how they got ranked fifth. They won CONCACAF for the first time ever. Sorry, I know that makes them harder to compare to a country trying to enter the World Cup without being a soverign nation, but in all fairness that was you who attempted the comparison.

You have got to be the only person in the world to separate them like that. Everyone else either calls them "football/soccer" or "American football/football" or "rugby for pansies/football." That last one is the least common, I think. :)

I tend to pronounce the name of a sport in the language where it's best played. And I for one have the utmost respect for the Latin style of "futbol." So I'll call it what they call it.

'Futbol' would apparently be Spanish.
As you're speaking English, it's Football.

Regardless of where it's 'best played' in your opinion.

First time?
They've won the Gold Cup three times, in '91, '02 and '05

What has being a sovereign nation got to do with entry into the competiton in the first place, and the U.S. getting spanked by crap teams?

Two questions for you.
1) Do you actually know how Football (the game, the rules regarding qualification and it's infrastructure) works?
2) Why won't you qualify your earlier claims of corruption based on politics/rasism/whatever?

Does that involve understanding off-sides? :)

There's been some dodgy offside decisions in the competition so far..

I remember in '94, when there was a huge kick up about the Americans wanting changes to the rules to make it more accessible to the U.S. viewers.
Quarters in place of halves (to allow for more advertising, apparently)
No offside rule.
No draws, any draw had to be decided by a shoot-out to avoid a goalless game
Shoot-outs and penalties to be taken from the centre circle, with something like 15 second allowed for the attacker to make his run and take a shot.

There were a few others that escape me for the moment.

Unsurprisingly, FIFA told them to bollocks.

1) I know that the team ranked #2 in the world coming into the World Cup isn't exactly "a crap team" as you so kindly put it. They might not really be the second-best squad on the planet, but they certainly won the necessary games to attain that ranking. It wasn't arbitrary. Just like coming into the World Cup ranked #5 in the world isn't arbitrary. You have to win games to get these rankings. If anything, these bizarre rankings show that there is not much difference between the #2 team in the world at a given moment and, say, the #10 team. My knowledge of soccer is not exactly as thorough as my knowledge of, say, Major League Baseball or the National Football League. Understand that I only got Fox Sports World (now Fox Soccer) for about a year, and I don't watch MLS because it's an embarassment. So when my opportunity to watch Premiership and La Liga games grew thin, what could I have done? Until I move into a place where we're all willing to pay for a fuller cable package, I won't be watching much futbol.

2) You're expecting some kind of conspiracy theory. You act as if my original post in this thread were a piece of journalistic dynamite and not someone who simply feels the World Cup experience for, say, Italy is a tad bit different from ours. Look at it again--did I state this as FACT, or simply a percieved attitude from a series of coin flips going the wrong way? I said what I had to say. I have nothing more to contribute in the way of percieved anti-Americanism. I was really hoping someone would take my statement, for once, as a musing and not a fucking statement of fact.

As far as futbol is concerned, I am not going to start calling the game with a pigskin and a gridiron "American Football" anytime soon. And I have enough respect for the game not to call it "soccer" all the time. So for purposes of written differentiation from Football, I will call the Beautiful game either...
-The Beautiful Game
-Futbol
-Oversized, low-scoring, warm-weather, outdoor hockey.

Re-read your original post in this thread, no-one's taking your statement as a 'musing', as it was utter bollocks, littered with accusations about the conduct and decisions of the referees, and the rest was complete nonsense about politics.

Bitter, much?
