RealLife Comics meets Apple Automator!

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

RealLife Comics meets Apple Automator!

Post by DorkBoy » Mon Jul 03, 2006 9:40 am

I have created a set of Apple Automator workflows (script-like nonscripting scripts) that download every picture from the RealLifeComics archives.

Basically, I'm asking permission to post a link to it, as I'm not sure how much this would effect the server if everyone did it at once (a RealLifeComics super-flush).

It prettty much will dump 1 year of comics at a time, and fill your destination w/ about 100megs of data.

PLEASE??? it's SO nice to have them on your system :D

I would also make available a program that I threw together that can be ran and hidden at startup, which will automatically grab the daily comic and display it as your desktop.

I"d prefer you didn't post any programs that auto-grab the current comic and display it out of context. Those kinds of things deprive me of pageviews for my advertisers. High traffic with low pageviews == bad for business.

As for the downloading to your HD thing.... I'm torn on it. It's a lot of data to be pulled from the server, again, with no pageviews to back it up. I suppose if you keep that JUST posted to the people here, I wouldn't be too terribly upset, but I also can't guarantee my host admin won't flag it and find a way to block it.

Sounds good. I kindof thought that it wouldn't be a great thing for everyone to have, just a few people. If you need the scripts, they're very simple and I can send it to you. I'm not sure how you're backed up for originals, s it might be a good tool for you.

Your host doesn't care apparently as it worked for me.

Another thing I'm working on is some scripts that will grab my daily comics and RSS feeds and dump them to a personal portal. But now that you mention the whole advertising click-through thing, I'm thinking against it. I don't usually click through on Google Ad-Words anyways, but your banner ads are pretty catchy :)

I store the comics manually each day as I read it :p. Maybe I could post those to usenet or get a torrent going, if someone wanted to get all of them but didn't want to strain the server. With Greg's permission of course.

Well this is meant for people who visit the site daily and wanna get a complete archive of the comic but don't wanna abuse the servers where the comics are hosted.

btw, why was the comic for the 30th of May a gif and not a png as usual? I just noticed it scrolling through my collection.

Hmmmm... No?

That being said, doing something like that is a very simple LWP-powered Perl script. Yay regexs!

Punctuation, sir. You're a high school graduate. You don't have to be afraid of punctuation anymore.
