Whoa

Post by Koeniou » Thu Jul 06, 2006 8:20 am

Well, I've had an interesting day.

Went and saw the new Pirates of the Caribeen movie today. It was pretty good. My family went together, got lunch & all that jazz.

Afterwards we went to go do the weekly food shopping. My younger sister disappears for awhile, looking a random shit, and rejoins us as mum, dad & I are just finishing up. Less than a minute after she joins us, a sweet little old lady approaches. Well, she wasn't that sweet. She was undercover security for the supermarket we were in. Taps my sister on the shoulder, and says "blah blah security.....I saw you open these packets *shows packets* Where are the items?" My sister reaches into her bag and takes out what she had taken (some eyeliner or something). My parents & I kind of stand there, mouths agape. The lady took my sister away, and dad went with them.

My mum nearly fell to pieces, but managed to finish the shopping. We loaded it in the car and went to leave, as dad & Kirsten were going to be awhile. She totally lost it in the car. We slowly make our way home, and she alternates between crying, complaining, fury & thanking me for being so good.

Dad & Kirsten just got home. Kirsten is inside, and my parents are outside discussing what to do. Kirsten is acting as though nothing happened, and is in her room doing something.

I'm stunned. I don't see why she did it. I know we don't have much money, but if she had asked any of us I'm sure we would've paid it. My parents give her as much (in fact, probably more) money that they can afford. They let her stay out on the weekends with friends. They buy her clothes, make-up, movies; pretty much anything she asks for.

In closing...wow, just wow. I never thought Kirsten would do something so stupid. Especially while out with us. My mum is so....embarrassed I think is the best way to put it. Dad is eerily calm.

I think I might just stay out of everyone's way tonight. The crossfire could get ugly.

Nice going. Family ones are always awkward, at least she didn't pretend innocence and have Mom and Pop defend her only to have a search reveal the items.
What's the legal consequence on this one?

Nothing as far as I can gather. She's banned from the store. But there's no record, or arrest or anything (that I've heard mentioned). She had a clean slate before this, so all they did was talk to her (apparently, I haven't gotten full details yet).

I was really suprised how calm she stayed. Makes me wonder how many times she's gotten away with it before...

There's no such thing as shoplifting once. I'm amazed she isn't charged, we throw the book at people out here. Misdemeanor theft, $200 restitution, +cost of the item taken (double if you don't have the item in usable condition).

Oh christ. And my parents are letting her get away with it. She turned on the waterworks, and they aren't even grounding her. Grah.

She is very lucky if that was me I would be married and still be grounded. Waterworks would definitely not have worked with my parents.

Time for the big sister talk. I've never felt the need to steal unless its for material goods myself, and its never been a great enough urge for me to go through with the act. Stealing small things is usually for the rush. You should probably try to stem this before she turn clepto. Your parents are probably too shocked and dissapointed to do anything about it at the moment.

That's stupid.

The question here is...did she take the things because she actually needed them...or just for the fun of the act?
If its for the first, it's easy to be changed, if its for the second...its somewhat more complex.

I'm still at a loss for why she did it.

As for my parents, its a mixture of disappointment, not wanting to make the problem worse (they have some logic that I can't be bothered explaining) and in my mum's case flashbacks to what she did as a kid & how her parents treated it.

I'm going to talk to her tomorrow.

Come to think of it, its probably just a rebellious phase she's going through. I doubt it's some big cry for help or some other such psycho-babble.

... wow. She's a little brat that needs a good swap upside the bum. and severe grounding. If she were my kid, she'd have no life for the summer.

I say: Knock her ass out and tell her she's fucking stupid. That should make your stance on the matter fairly clear.

Koeniou: that sucks! And your parents are just enabling her, they're only gonna make it worse being like that. o.o

Yeah, it would be a bad idea for your parents to just pretend it didn't happen. She should get some punishment.

I think we all agree this girl needs a little more than a stern talking to, but I doubt that will changer her parents' minds.

A lot of the time, people shoplift to get attention - and getting in trouble is part of that. So is looking cool in front of your friends, and all that jazz. There could be dozens of reasons. Hopefully your sister will be receptive to what you have to say, but understand that in her head, she probably hs a perfectly justifiable reason for what she did.
