101 facts that give happiness and hope
101 facts that give happiness and hope
I've been feeling a sore lack of happy or hopeful thoughts in my life and while I normally fight this with cynical humor, it's become incredibly exhausting as an approach, so I'm looking for a few things to help perk me up. If anyone has some good happy facts, please share them.
1. I'm skeptical of this and still looking into it, but hopeful fact number one is the existence of Edmund Dene Morel, an English Quaker businessman and journalist who almost singlehandedly spearheaded the movement against King Leopold II's regime in the Congo, and unlike many major political leaders and organizers had a fairly stable personal and love life, and had a fairly long and happy life with his wife and four children, despite being imprisoned over a technicality around the age of fifty by the English government after becoming a protestor against WWI, and dying of a heart attack shortly after.
2. My dog's a really cool person, and has not as of yet intentionally tried to kill me or stabbed anyone in the back in any major way.
3. The English abolitionist movement had little to no real economic incentives fueling it and was organized by a bunch of fairly insignificant people, yet was the catalyst for one of the most important human rights movements of all time and pretty much every human rights movement following it. I haven't done enough research, but as far as I can tell it was a movement fueled by human goodness.
btw, feel free to refute the above if you have any, but try to keep it brief without hijacking it with a debate. If you there's a threat of that happening, start up a seperate thread and link to it. I really do need some happy thoughts right now, and while I'm all for free intellectual discussion, I don't really have the energy for a heated debate.

What is there to protest about WWII?
No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave. -- Calvin Coolidge
Today's liberals wish to disarm us so they can run their evil and oppressive agenda on us. The fight against crime is just a convenient excuse to further their agenda. I don't know about you, but if you hear that Williams' guns have been taken, you'll know Williams is dead. -- Walter Williams, Professor of Economics, George Mason University

Well, he said World War ONE, not TWO, which is a war that never should have been fought by anyone but people were too stupid to avert it... there's that that one could protest, yes.
"He who lives by the sword dies by my arrow."
"In your histories, there are continual justifications for all manner of hellish actions. Claims of nobility and heritage and honor to cover up every bit of genocide, assassination, and massacre. At least the Horde is honest in their naked lust for power."
No... How were we too stupid to avert the first Gulf War where Saddam invaded Kuwait?
By selling him weapons?
Of course the Gulf War could have been avoided - Iraq's invasion of Kuwait wasn't the start of anything execpt the hostilities, the war had been building for years.
War's generally only start when there is no option but to fight, they usually have decades of poor diplomacy and people being unpleasant behind them.

"Face it, you're two nipples away from being human."
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the shattered windows of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?

If you continue to misuse my friend Mr. Apostrophe, there will be no option but to fight.
So, basically what you're saying is that Kuwait had been mooning Iraq, maybe egging Saddam's palaces, or even proudly televising the president of Kuwait whacking at a map of Iraq with his shoe?
Regardless, if a nation decides to invade you (i.e. Iraq invading Kuwait), you can't just "diplomacy" your way out of it.

The follies which a man regrets the most in his life are those which he didn't commit when he had the opportunity. - Helen Rowland, A Guide to Men, 1922
I think what he's saying, Deacon, is that constant diplomacy is better than years of bad diplomacy leading up to "You know what, fuckers? EAT BULLETS".
So when you first see tensions, diplomacy your way out of those so it doesn't escalate.
Of course, he's Scottish, so he might just be talking about sheep.

Is actually the most effective form of diplomacy. Nothing averts war like being scared shitless of your enemies.

Kinda obvious. Nobody's even tried to invade scotland; Even the romans walled it off and tried to ignore it.Nothing averts war like being scared shitless of your enemies.
