Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale...

It's storytime boys and girls! So sit back, relax, and never fall for an email scam.

We all know not to fall for email scams, but we all also make mistakes every once in a while. For instance, I once stupidly thought Yahoo had made a new stipulation that you had to sign into your Yahoo account in order to access geocities accounts. It didn't sound too far fetched of an idea at the time, but then when the form generator gave me an error message from some weird ass site, I knew I had been had.

I got off pretty lucky. I changed my password, cleared out all of my personal information from the account, including friend list, and just started over with a new account. My sister's mistake may have cost her $600 or more.

She was unfortunate enough to have made the mistake of falling for the old "Your PayPal Account needs updating" scam. Without even thinking she clicked the link and gave them all sorts of info including her debit card number and her PayPal log-in, which linked to one of her bank accounts.

They managed to get around $600 out of her account before she noticed what had happened, and since it was after hours and she was a bit distraught, she was having problems finding out how to get her card canceled.

I helped her out, called a few numbers and got the card and her PayPal account canceled then made sure she was going to have all the stuff she'll need in the morning when she goes to the bank in order to hopefully get her money back.

Ontop of that, I've got to work an 11 hour shift for the next 2 days, plus I worked an overnight at the begining of the week! YAY for being dead tired!

I've burned it into my family's mind very thoroughly to not fall for that kind of stuff.

I always told my family if you're not EXPECTING an email, and it has any sort of link or file in it, clear it with me before you do anything.

So far it's gotten us out of three viruses and a paypal scam.

Unfortunately Paypal's official policy on losing money through them by scams like this is "fuck you." But best of luck getting the money back.

I'm with PayPal on that one. Caveat idiota.

My dad got caught by a supposed email from his bank a while back. I gave pretty much the same advice as Blaze.

My mom freaked out about one of these - "we are going to close you're account" at such and such a bank yadda yadda - and she called me and made me come over and check it out and when I got here and looked at the email - I told her to read it. Thoroughly.

Then I asked her if she'd tell me what bank this was supposedly from.

And then I asked her if she even HAD an account there.

That's about the time she clued it xD Poor internet inept Müttie <3

I have my mother trained to look out for those type of E-mails. Going on 5 years now without a single scam.

I just don't use internet banking, myself. Not really worth it when I can conduct most things by finding an ATM.

Nothing wrong with using Online banking, so long as you know what you're looking at.

These scams bug me to no end. Although, I seem to get a lot more 419'ers coming in than anything else...but I just like to string those guys along and mess with 'em.

Bleh...email is so bogus these days. It used to be totally sweet...what happened? :P

I once got one of these scams for an ebay account. I laughed hysterically when I read it because I've never even gone to ebay.

Except the bother of having to remember a password and question in addition to the PIN for the cards, and logging in every few days to keep it open.

That's a sucky online bank.
My bank gave me two papers, one with a 8 digit pin number(which i seem to remeber just fine, so i don't need that paper) and a password paper with 80 passwords for 80 log-ins.
No need to log in just to keep it working.

I figure it's a security system of some sort. If I can't get into it MYSELF, nobody else can.
Doesen't help that it took me almost a year to recall the PIN for my credit card.

What bank are you with that needs you to log in every few days to keep your online service running?
