Holy Nuclear Necro, Batman!

Well, North Korea performed another test today. Apparently this one was successful. The resulting earthquake was a magnitude 4.7 which corresponds to about 11 kilotons.

From what I've read, North Korea is playing like the poker guy willing to bet the shirt off his back, feeling like they have nothing to lose.

So what is the next step? Diplomatic actions seems to only allow North Korea time to build more weapons. Do you still try to use diplomatic means? Sanctions only seem to harden their "us versus the World (literally)" mentality. Do you still try to declare sanctions? Do you send in Navy Seal or some other elite organization to try to thwart them somehow, with what intelligence services might know about North Korea's military complex (which may be a lot or nothing)?

I'm guessing, by the way, that UN will not be able to pass sanction against this action because China will veto whatever action might be implemented, claiming that sanctions are too severe.

None, you cut the Gordian knot. You develop some kind of inhuman weapon and unleash it upon the world. Then people will panic and loose sight of their goals, thus eliminating any political differences.

Sadly, it would work. Nothing else works: Sanctions have failed, embargoes have failed, diplomacy has failed. The only action available is to call their bluff. A "stern talking to" by the UN will only strengthen their resolve. Its like yelling at a dog after they dug in the trash. The only way to stop them is to prevent the action, or to stop them in the process. Korea KNOWS that if they do anything now they will be destroyed, so they are biding their time. The only problem is America already attacked a nation within this decade, and fears for their precious world PR to do it again, and no other Country as the ball or Grit to do it.

Everyone will just sit back and appease these psychos until they have enough strength to roll over South Korea and expand from there. All because no country is willing to take on the sacrifice necessary to do so. It's happened before, it WILL happen again, this is not a matter of if N Korea will attack its where! If we keep letting them advance soon American cities will be threatened, and by then its too late. Millions of innocents will die, all because a few were too scared to rough up their rose garden!

Our only option is to call their bluff while they are weak.

I'm totally in agreement with you, Eihger. Had I been the Commander in Chief when they tested that long-range missile, that thing would have been blown out of the sky about three seconds off the launch pad. But we're too wishy-washy at the moment while we go around the world apologizing for removing dictators and psychopaths.

So we have to sit back and wait to see if Kim Jong Il is really that insane.

Hawaii or Alaska, yes - it could.

And I hadn't forgotten China. But this was all covered in another thread.

No kidding. We've had a loose-cannon dictator for years and have fired off hundreds of nukes.
But yes, go ahead and start another war; this one will probably over in weeks too.
Technically it's not starting anything. It'd be a continuation of the Korean war, which never reached an end.

Why should they not be allowed to make tests? Because of their nutty leader?

Also, they can´t even reach the US with the Taepdong2, or can they?
I can't help but notice you're in Germany, and not threatened by nuclear war. But as I said before, THIS mentality is why so many people will die when this war erupts. The "wait and see" mentality has NEVER worked in the past, the isolationism method never worked. The only thing we can do is take them out while they are weak. Its not like we can't say " Oh we thought they have WMD and intend to use them" They have shown they have them and very vehemently said they intend to use them. I say intervene now, take he slap on the wrist and stern talking to and be on with it, one less dictator and innocent lives safe.

War is inevitable, its best is be on your terms.

From Here
“The Korean People’s Army will not be bound to the Armistice Agreement any longer,” the official Korean Central News Agency said in a statement today.

Technically hell. It's still going on, regardless of what one may otherwise think. Just because there was a ceasefire for 50 odd years doesn't mean it ended. The UN is still officially at war with North Korea.

Given how most everyone else seems to blame the US for everything and says that we deserve everything bad that happens to us, some of us have just stopped giving a fuck about most of the rest off the world.

I seriously doubt that that will ever happen. Well, they might steamroll South Korea, though I'd be surprised if they did, since a combination of NK being inferior to Germany and the progress of technology makes it hard to launch a meaningful surprise attack - short of an onslaught of nuclear weapons that would likely spark nuclear retaliation. There would be a necessary buildup, which would likely be countered by another buildup, which would prevent a 'steamroll'. And even then, even if they somehow blitz down and take SK, as soon as they take direct hostile action, the war they start will come to an end. They might pound SK, but as I said: I seriously doubt they will ever be able to build up the offensive AND defensive and structural might to "expand from there."

I will treat others as they would treat me. You want me to be nice to you? Then be nice to me. If you raise your fist against me I will do my damnedest to make sure you hit the floor without every touching me. There are always two ways of breaking a cycle fuggle. One of them involves the two parties coming to a mutual agreement. The other involves only one party being left around. In the event of no agreement being reached, I will not break the cycle by being the one that gets slaughtered.

As to a 'buildup', there would be no need for one. It's been built up for 50 years.
