Need help understanding a reference in a Simpsons episode

Iin "Mother Simpson", Mother Simpson and Lisa both say they hate John Knowles. Does anyone know why?

You got me thinking. Because I remember this very line, and I wanted to look into it further. (Why? Because I agree with them--A Seperate Peace sucks!)

Grandma Simpson: Although I hardly consider A Seperate Peace ninth-grade level.
Lisa Simpson: Yeah, more like preschool.
Grandma Simpson: I hate John Knowles.
Lisa Simpson: Me too.

I found this extremely funny, because I had to read this book in--you guessed it--the ninth grade, and I came to the same conclusion. I, too, hate John Knowles. As far as I can tell, the joke is just a stab at that particular book.

read the book quickly did the homework the slept next few days till the test and the movie.

All I remembered from the book is Blitzball and Leper. Yay English class.
