No idea. He thought that when the previous tenants took their water softener out that something got messed up. But the softener was moved out in July.

I betcha it's a loose connection somewhere - go looking around the water heater, starting at the top, and working your way down.

The leak is probably from a fitting, and if you find it, simply snugging it up a bit might stop the leak.

I do believe the landlord checked that much. He said it would be a while before he was able to get anyone out to look into it further.

Just hope it hasn't been leaking for several years, it wasn't fun to renovate several rooms due to mold in structures.
