Remember, remember

Post by Prospero » Sun Nov 05, 2006 5:12 pm

...the fifth of November. Happy Guy Fawkes day to you crazy Brits out there. Enjoy your burning effigies and fireworks. Us Americans have to wait a little bit for our next holiday...

Yes we're probably one of the few countries which celebrate the date a revolution DIDN'T happen and ignore the date a revolution actually took place...
In my third year I'll get to play with guns, explosives and poisons... JOY!!

Shit who says we can't celebrate as well? Any reason to burn things and get drunk is reason enough for me.

Wasn't Guy Fawkes drawn and quartered, not burned?

The fireworks represent the attempted explosion of Parliament, IIRC.

On January 31, Fawkes, Winter, and a number of others implicated in the conspiracy were taken to Old Palace Yard in Westminster, in front of the scene of the intended crime, where they were hanged, drawn and quartered.

Fawkes, though weakened by torture, cheated the executioners. When he was to be hanged until almost dead, he jumped from the gallows, so his neck broke and he died, thus avoiding the gruesome later part of this form of execution. A co-conspirator, Robert Keyes, had attempted the same trick, but unfortunately for him the rope broke, so he was drawn fully conscious.
