Question to eliminate one of the possibilities Martin brought up. Do any of the lights on the laptop turn on when you have the AC plugged in? Such as the one showing that it is getting AC?

Well, it wasn't clear that it was plastic. In that case use hot glue, then, maybe? Come on, be enterprising here

Every once in a while the light for the AC will come on when I plug it in. I\It disappears as soon as I attempt to turn it on, however, and will disappear in a minute or so if I dont do anything.

Sounds like a capacitor may be charging enough to light the LED, but draining immediately when you attempt to power on, or draining slowly (but more quickly than it can be recharged) otherwise. Bad caps, methinks.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

Well, I called tech support, and they said it was probably static buildup messing things up. I tried their magic degaussing maneuver and voila! It's working again. Apparantly I have to do that every three months or so.

Yowza, that was scary.

What? Care to share the procedure and any info regarding wtf this "static buildup" really is and how it causes this problem?

Yeah, sounds to me like "our systems are busted but we're going to blame it on something else."

I can't seem to get my webcam to work. It's built into my laptop, and when I click the button in my main menu it won't start up like it used to, any ideas?

Going to need some more info, perpetualglow. For starters:
What kind of laptop?
What OS?
What "main menu"?
What software do you use for your webcam?
Is there an error message? If so, what is the message?

Oh sorry.
Umm it's an HP pavilion dv600 (the white special edition one), I use Windows xp I think, by main menu I mean the start thingie. And the software was on the computer when I got it. I tried to see if there were disks for it but there were none in the box it came in.

The "magic degaussing maneuver" is taking out the battery, plugging in the AC, and holding down the power button (with the pc off) for 10 or so seconds.
Yeah, I don't get it either. :/

Not sure how it works, but I have heard of that before. Supposedly it actually works.

On other models? A friend just asked me yesterday about a problem where a notebook wouldn't power up. I've not heard of this before, so I'm wondering if it will work.
