December 19th, 2006 - school finished

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

So what does your time in school and externship actually allow you to do.
Or rather what will you be doing with these new found powers/training.

I can totally understand the whole "slow motion" train of thought for being out of school. I, unfortunately, am only out for 4 weeks...but hey, it's better than nothing! The countdown begins again on 1/16, and then off for 3 months!

The ironic thing is, Greg's 1 year in school will get him the same or better pay than a lot of people who're going to college for 4+ years (depending on which resteraunt he ends up in).

i went to college for one year and dropped out 'cause my parents are jerks and refused to pay any more tuition (they make 200k a year and they won't pay 10k for tuition? sheesh) and they wouldn't let me get a job while in school, so i was screwed. Now i'm looking for a job and saving to go to a local college. So i got a ways to go.

I bet most newly graduated cooks get the crap hours though. And I hope he likes working nights! :D

Congrats, I'm sure that stuff was alot of hard work, you should be proud.

spikegirl7, there are many avenues to getting money for school. It's not your parents obligation to do so on your behalf. But take heart! Many people have put themselves through school, and have been doing so for literally decades! Chin up!

i'm well aware and working towards it. It gets slightly harder though when people won't hire you because of no previous work experience.

Bigity, did you miss the part where she wasn't allowed to get a job? Loans and scholarships will only get you so far.

Which by the way, is a choice she made. She can move out and get a job as an adult.

But what does that have to do with now? The post indicates it was a past limitation, not a current one.

spikegirl7, I know job availability can be a problem. Rural areas, it can be really difficult. I live in a big city, so finding a job is easy. Finding one that pays well is a little harder.

I had no work experience that could be applied to my current job, but I was able to get the job by highlighting things I'd done in school and outside of school that demonstrated I was a good candidate for the position.

Job experience helps, but just being able to interview well is way more important. You could try working on your interviewing skills. Also, most job descriptions are the employer's description of their "dream" applicant. Don't let the "1 year of customer service experience required" stop you. You can still apply, and use your cover letter (or just stopping by the restaurant or store) to convince the employer your worthy of at least an interview. The worst they can say is "no".

I have to admit, I thought you were being a selfish brat when expecting your 200K-earning parents to pay for 10K of tuition. My parents make about that much combined, and paying for 10K worth of room and board for me (I had a scholarship for the rest) on top of mortgage, food, clothing, transportation, and trying to save for retirement was a HUGE burden, and necessitated a small (couple of thou) student loan in order to just make it through all four years. I feel incredibly lucky that they were able to help me out. I don't feel that I was entitled to them paying for my college. If you aren't responsible enough to find a way to pay for college, maybe you don't belong there yet.
me: today is so weird. I feel so... directionless.

J: So this is more a scalar day than a vector day.

I pay for it with student loans. That's the only way I can afford it. Sure, I'll be in debt when I get out, but hopefully I will get a job that'll pay me enough to start paying it off.

Well, I did three years at a private school in oregon before changing majors and moving to a state south in southwest texas...

Its cheaper... and warmer, but its been a while now. I want out. And most of my Gen Ed either didn't transfer or hadn't been taken yet...

(Western Civ is now a "multi Cultural" class, and I gotta take some US history... >:/)

That and the distraction of true love doesn't help any. Esp. when she's in Wisconsin.

Shoot me, please.

BTW, Good work Greg! Now you can make GOOD ramen surprise!
