Games used to be better
And this was all fields
Children showed you some respect
You could leave your front door unlocked
(Sweeping statement alert)
I think more sophisticated graphics and ever-improving technology are killing actual gameplay. I whiled away manys an hour as a wee lad playing such arcade classics as Bubble Bobble, Bombjack, Shadow Warrior and Street Fighter II (yes, there WAS such a game, without all the added wankery at the end of the title.
In saying that I am very, very old. I still remember Bruce Lee on the Commodore 64. Great days

I guess it just takes moderation. I dont play that often and I use them as a last resort in the case that I have nothing to do (which is more often than you would think considering a live in the middle of no where).

The basic problem which exists, as I see it, is that the game industry is a 10.9 billion dollar one. Just like Hollywood, game companies are afraid to go with something too new or too different, so we get tons of clones of popular games. (Think about how many movies used the Matrix "Bullet-Time" Bullet effect in the exact same way without innovation?)
In my undergrad college days, a lot of people on my floor owned Sega Genesis. All of them also owned every version of Madden for every kind of sport. When I asked why (since I was they "guy with the Sega CD and that Lunar game"), they basically said something like:
Well, I use to play (Insert sport) in High School, but I didn't think I could go pro. This way, I'm living the dream.
Other games are more based on flashiness as opposed to substance because flash is what sells to the general market. DOA X for example.
And please don't throw stuff at me, but I'm not a big fan of games that are more cut scenes than gameplay. It's what bugged me about FFX when I started playing it...
OUCH, I said not to throw things!
Another thing which bugs me (at least where I live) is the death of the arcade culture. In Japan, the arcade scene has mutated with innovative interactive game which you CAN'T play at home. Has anyone played Punch Mania (a Fist of the North Star punching game), full Drummania, or a game where you use a Samurai sword to fight people on a big screen (I didn't translate the name of that one..)? Around here, the only arcades that have survived, are places where the arcade isn't their primary business.
Finally, to answer the poll question: I do not find games boring, MOSTLY because I don't have the time to play them as much as I use to. So the ones I do play, I appreciate more.
I need a Playstation 2, too...

Willoughby Jackson, in defence of DOA: XBV,. it wasn't flashyness that sold it,. it was BOOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!
but I think it's more like daemon princess was saying,.... climbing aroudn acient ruins and getting shot at isn't as fun in a game when you've done the real thing, you don't get the pain, the sweat, the fear, the heat,. and all that,................ sooooooo,. to enjoy games again got to:
A) quit my job at the game store, so I can look at the things without temporalily loozing the sight in my left eye *and that's me GOOD eye toO!!!),...
and B) stay in more,...

Have you seen the h@ck0r texture-map subsitution code for that game? That's flashing, isn't it.
There's always the living breathing fantasy world angle. (See Ultima Online or Evercrack...)
Though I do agree with you Gar, games can not be a complete substitution for real life experiences. (I climbed a mountain this summer... That was awesome, but painful.)
Maybe it's because you're around so many games all the time, and either you've A) seen more of the same old, same old clones than all of us combined or B) it's too much of a good thing?

I don't know. There are still many games that having things you can't do in real life without huge consequences. I would never steal car, drive it as fast as possible into ramp like thing, and then flip a million times and live.daemon princess was saying,.... climbing aroudn acient ruins and getting shot at isn't as fun in a game when you've done the real thing, you don't get the pain, the sweat, the fear, the heat,. and all that,................

That was just an example.... Japan games are very wierd. You can be a mosquito sucking people, taking a dog for a walk, even take pics of naked models. If these games bore you then you need to try some different ones. Heck I am buying the One Peice game for gamecube, it looks great (who needs to read japanese in these games).
I belive in Kirbyism: I eat you, therefor I gain your powers!
