Can't stand Aretha's voice, either. Joel and Dylan are good choices, though.
You've got to be fucking kidding me. You can't stand Aretha Franklin's voice? That in and of itself kind of disqualifies you from commenting, as apparently you are the owner of a broken hearing apparatus. But then you go on to say you enjoy listening to Bob Dylan sing? Ridiculous.

Speaking of ridiculous, I'm throwing Yes in the ring. And Chicago.

I'm throwing Yes and Chicago OUT of the ring, mainly because of Peter Cetera's destruction of the latter. It pains me though as I especially like the early albums.

WtF is wrong with YOUR ears? Her vocal style, as well as that of most black women of her age, is one of the worst things brought into music in ever. I mean, it could stand up there was worst, up until gangsta, or maybe emo.

She's just got SOUL which is ANNOYING. Dylan, like Cohen and Rob Dougan and Tom Waits, has character.
"He who lives by the sword dies by my arrow."

Also, Sophira, historial important != good music. Witness, also, Elvis. Seriously. Covers of Elvis (esp. by Dwight Yokam) are far better than the originals - though Elvish is more historically important than pretty much anyone that's covered him.

I Hate Elvis. Some of his ballads are okay but they're better when someone else sings them.

I'm voting for Aerosmith.

Oh, and I second Queen.

Queen.
Queen are like a hugely rich meal consisting of many wonderful courses.
I enjoy a blow-out now and again but I couldn't eat it every day

James Taylor
I think Deacon may have broken the poll straight away there. Had the pleasure of seeing the man live and he is simply amazing. A voice like honey, songs from God's own mp3 player and he's a laugh-riot to boot.

Journey
Don't know who they are. If they didn't sing 'Why Can't We Be Friends' then I'm simply not interested.

Pink Floyd
Vastly, vastly over-rated. The darlings of bolshy, loud-mouthed arsehole students who go on and on about life, having hardly lived, in scraping tones while they share a pint - paid for by my taxes thank-you so much - while the rest of the pub want to kill them.
Also, old guys with greying pony-tails.

Billy Joel
My man. It's between him and ol' JT so far. C'mon. Listen to Only the Good Die Young and tell me it doesn't want to make you impregnate a Catholic school-girl.

Frank Sinatra
Arethra Franklin
Louis Armstrong

Voices. Not musical acts, I would argue, in that I don't believe they wrote their own material. Nuff 'spect to them and all. But I say non.

Chuck Berry
Sounds vaguely sexual

Don McLean
Boring. American Pie is, of course, a classic, but after that it's largely more of the same.

Bob Dylan
Weeeeeeeeeee-weeeeeeeeeee-weeeeeeee-weeeeeeeeee
Irritating nasal delivery ruins some of the best lyrics ever written. Should have stuck to poetry.

REO Speedwagon
?

Elton John
Spoiled, histrionic cow. I'd vote her off the planet, never mind this poll.

John Coltrane
Saxaphone solos are like uncooperative wanks. Brilliant until you realise that worrying about Johnson in accounts losing you the Hedburg contract is delaying the vinegar strokes. Annoying after a while. Finish the fucking song.

If I might be permitted to throw in my two cents:
U2
Now that they've managed to shake off the bloat of jukebox parody they had become, and even though it's now cool for the kids to hate them and Bono is either worshipped or despised, I'd argue they're a contender.
Been making quality music for decades. Unafraid to experiment. Best live act in the world today.

Pixies
Defined a generation. Invented grunge and the actual good that came from that. Back now. Huzzah.

Dylan can get the hell right out of that contenders list the whiny bastard.

I have no good complaints about the rest of that list as it stands, especially Armstrong, Taylor and Sinatra.

I enjoy Bryan Adams' older stuff. Summer of 69, etc.

Love Queen, obviously. Can't stand Dylan, or Cocker. He ruined Get By With a Little Hellp From My Friends, so he must die.

I like some Billy Joel Stuff. River of Dreams is a favourite of mine.

Bryan Adams is a skidmark on the jocks of the music industry.

I'm going for newer bands here with Ben folds/five and The Avalanches.

I back Queen.

Rors, good point about Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong not singing their own material. Although I don't see why that eliminates them.
