Why I'm Glad the Wii Is So Hard To Find

Post by jetnightshade » Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:05 pm

I want a Wii. I mean, I really really want one. I've gone from store to store, I've used on line tracking, but there are just not any to be had in my area except from scalpers on Craigslist (F you scalpers, it's not the $100 mark-up keeping me from using you, it's the principle). I even got up early this last Sunday, on a day _when I was moving into a new house_ and went to Target to buy one, only to be told that they had sold out five mintures after the store opened.

At this point in my life my real constraint on my geekdom is time, not money. I wouldn’t spend tens of thousands of dollars to buy Luke’s original lightsaber or anything, but any reasonable object in geekdom that can be obtained with money is pretty much easily attainable for me and has been for years.

Now the real interesting thing about that is that it does not provide as much satisfaction as you might guess. In fact, it robs a lot of the joy out of obtaining geek artifacts because as Spock said, "After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true."

But with the Wii . . . I just can't get one. It's frustraiting yes, but it also has a certain sweet taste to it because it's nice to be reminded that one can't always get what one wants instantly. I'm so used to just being able to buy any game I want without any real effort or thought, that being reminded of what it was like being a 12 year old kid who was anticipating buying Super Mario III is kind of nice.

I'd still buy a Wii the second I can, but I just haven't been this exited about a gaming system since . . . the early 90's probably.

The Wii is making me feel like a kid again even before I've bought one.

Anyone else having these thoughts about the Wii?

I'm planning on buying a Wii two to four weeks before Brawl comes out. Then I'll be on the Wii like a WoW addict is on a computer.

If you think missing out on buying one is bad, they can't even sell them yet in Taiwan...some taxation law or something. Anyway, they had a demonstration at a mall here and people were going nuts. Also, people are importing them from Japan for like USD$430+.

yeah, i get how you feel.

only my desire is for the PS3. I REALLY want one. But the cost is just too dang high at the moment. If I had $600 I'd use it to buy a car, which I really need. But yeah, I get what you mean.

I was expecting a post about how you you were glad for some industry reason, not a personal reason. That really resonates with me - I'm in a very similar boat.
