Jan 30th - Frolicking

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

I tend to mix it up. Often it's whim, or whichever I think can have a more appropriate name. For instance I have a female NE hunter named Dyanna. Cuz, ya know goddess of the hunt...

In WoW alone, I have 5 characters I play 3 male 2 female. Back in UO my ONLY character was female, galaxies male, FF female, and CoH male. Hmmm seems about 3-2 ratio is about standard for me.

Also, the whole "I don't like something because its cool to like it" is really lame.
Agreed - see Judgemental's quote. I don't dislike it because people like it. I dislike it because seeing it everywhere and hearing people quote it and everything, everywhere, is fucking annoying.

On the subject of cross-avataring, lying about it = bad, but the two don't necessarily go hand in hand.
"He who lives by the sword dies by my arrow."

"In your histories, there are continual justifications for all manner of hellish actions. Claims of nobility and heritage and honor to cover up every bit of genocide, assassination, and massacre. At least the Horde is honest in their naked lust for power."

My husband played girls in Everquest for one reason... free stuff. He got free armor, weapons, ports, everything.... He decided to finally play a guy char when he had someone hit on him. Some people take game figures far too seriously.

And no, not all girlfriends or wives or anything don't like their significant other to have female chars... I could care less. If he can stand other guys flirting with him just cause he has a hot avatar then whatever.

Everybody is different in the end. I personally liked having my chars fit the roles based on lore, racial or class, etc. Much like I prefer prefer playing a human or night elf female priestess vs an evil undead male shadow priest. (not that I havent played an evil human shadow priestess, its just easier to play roles that way for me)

Lying to the point of dating or what not is a bit wrong though.

Sometimes it gets hard though. In FFXI I got into my role a bit too much some times (I blame anime and the fact I was playing a mithra (my first female character for that matter)) and I had this one guy all of a sudden starting hitting on me. Least to say i got myself painted into a corner because I didnt want to hurt his feelings in telling him a guy, but I also didnt want to the point of no return. Good thing I stopped playing FFXI and started playing CoH instead. >.>

I've always wondered about guys who flirt with girls online about whom they know nothing. I assume this is because with no information we're free to invent whatever we'd like, and thus assume the best... but even supposing that it's actually a girl, she could have the personality of a boar and the appearance to match. Do you go up to every woman you see in real life and hit on her? If not, why would you do it online where you can't tell anything about them?

Truthfully, I actually find myself more inclined to play female characters in RPG's than male ones. Not in D&D - I have a hard time actually ROLEPLAYING one, so I tend to avoid it there. But In my WoW character list, there are 2 males, and 3 females. I actually have these two main characters in my head - Sagus and Maelyn. They've been rolling around, developing a story for years. YEARS and years. But I find recently that Sagus has been almost occluded by Maelyn. Sagus' personality is very basic and undefined - Maelyn is a much deeper well.

Re: The question of this thread, I think it's only a problem if the person carries it too far. Once you start to pretend to ACTUALLY be the other gender you're playing, that's when it starts to cross the line into creepy territory.

I get hit on daily when just standing in Orgrimmar, then when I tell em I'm a dude, then run away pretty quickly. But who can blame them, blood elves are hot :p

I play Horde mostly, so aside from a few spins in the Alliance, I mostly play male characters, female Horde are sinfully ugly. Which makes me wonder about a friend of mine who made a female Orc hunter... Of course, seeing as my main is a male Orc, this means I can use flirts on him, because Orcs have the greatest flirts:

Yeah, Horde do have the best flirts. But, I disagree that horde females are ugly. The troll and orc females don't look bad at all.

PS FireAza is silly, and I can say this because I'm Oriden and I'm allowed.
Also PS Zenny is a moosehead.

For me, I tend to play female characters despite being male. Sometimes, there's multiple reasons why - in WoW for instance, there are very few good choices for male avatars. Human males' arms are way too thick, while Orcs, Trolls, and Undead males all stand hunched over (it makes sense for the Tauren, and kinda for the undead. But aren't Orcs supposed to be a Proud race? Shouldn't they, y'know, stand tall with pride?).

But beyond that, for some reason my female characters just tend to do better in the game then my male characters. Not just the "free stuff" and "easy help" factors - I'm sure there's some subconscious reason, like I'm more protective over the female characters or something.

I think the reason why it freaks people out is then a person never knows who is on the other side. I'm constantly saying, "Well [blank] said they would help us as we agreed to help her, um him, um, it, gah... I dunno." There have also been cases that went too far. Back when playing FFXI, we had a guild member who told us they were actually female. They continued the ruse so far that they actually agreed to date one of the other guild members and would spend much of his time talking on AIM with this other guild member. Once we discovered his secret, we were all shocked and felt really bad for the other said guild member. I doubt that this is the first time it has happened too.
That happened in my old guild, and if weren't for some real life events the guy would have continued faking being a female for a long time.
Something similar happened in my old guild. Turned out that the female toon was a gay male, and after an initial shock, the other guy was actually laughing about it, now they're best friends. Sometimes things do work out.

The only similar event I've ever experienced was with this female toon I was running around with for a while in EQ. I never once flirted or anything. It's just not my thing to hit on female toons online. And it never flirted with me. We were just groupmates who looked each other up regularly for exp runs. Nothing more.

So my time on the legends server was running out and I was ready to get back to normal guild-play, so I'm sitting there soloing a bit and chatting with this person, saying fairwell, nice knowing you, good luck in the future, etc etc.

Dude proceeds with this whole speach, "I have a confession... I'm actually a gay male", etc etc. I didn't care. Didnt' change anything at all. So I said, "ok, whatever. why's that matter?" And he blew the F*** up at me about me hating him for being gay and all this jazz. Why, because I didn't do flips and scream 'yay' when he told me?

I play males in these games because I'm usually pretty excessively violent and nasty as part of my roleplaying style, and I tend to play evil characters. None of that seems to fit well with a female toon. But my mules are usually female. Especially in EQ with the bazaar. I sold more stuff off female toons than I ever did off males.

I once ran a female second account which I two-boxed. Played her as the cleric sister of my shadow knight main character. Worked out well, since I just simply didn't chat with her. So anyone trying to hit on me just got ignored. Her chat windows had all normal chat turned off. All she saw was battle spam.

I did get drunk one time and run around as a female noob for a few hours with some friends watching. Looking back at the logs the next day kind of disgusted me at just how sappy and stupid most men seem to be in these games. It's a fake chick in a video game, guys... come on! Kind of put into perspective though why so many females in my guild, at the time, were playing male toons. They just couldn't deal with the bs. I don't blame them.
