Clearing the Hard-drive

Post by Kasz » Thu Feb 15, 2007 5:25 am

I'm getting a buddy of mine to sell my old hard drive, but I want to clear all the data on it first. Not just the conventional 'DELETE EVERYTHING then FACTORY RESTART' thing. I KNOW you can bring back data on a hard drive, CD-RW, SD memory chip, etc. if you have the right software.
My question is, how do I make my hard drive immune to such tampering before selling it? I was thinking deleting all my data, factory restarting, then installing a sh**-load of games, and then deleting those...

Any input would be much appreciated!

Wtf is this "factory restart" BS? Regardless, Google for drive wiping.

Shredding the disks into 1x1mm sized pieces is about the only way.... Either that or setting off some thermite above it...
I really need a new sig....

Wave a huge magnet over it, like a hard drive read/write magnet. You can get one of those out of an old hard drive.

But that could also fuck the hard drive to the point of NOT working....

But I have to say, thermite is only a stopgap solution at best. Put cesium on it, and pour a jug of water for best results.

On a side note, old hard drives make cool clocks...the platters are nice and shiny, and the armature makes good hands.

EDIT: Sorry, digressing a little too much here. Maybe you could fill the hard drive with something tasty and transcendental, like key lime pi?

Hmmm. Maybe a full 35gb (yah, it's pretty small) of animal porn. Just for a nasty surprise, ya know?
Umm.. does anybody know where I can get gigs upon gigs of animal pornography?

Don't listen to them. First of all, a degaussing magnet has to be FAR more powerful than Scowdich's suggestion. They're almost never used anymore anyway.

Grab a copy of DBAN (http://dban.sourceforge.net/), and have it overwrite the drive a few times. You can then send it to whomever you wish.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

Awesome.

If I did this with my CURRENT hard-drive, I could safely load the factory software back onto it after, right?
Ye gods, I'm paranoid.

The only way to definitely make your data unreadable on it is to take a lump hammer to it. Failing that, dban is the best way to do it, but I believe the documentation is crap for it, so you better know what you're doing.

DoD Standard is a 7 pass wipe of the drive IIRC.

MASS DEGAUSER :D

Failing that, there are always the willi-pete charges. Put them on top of the racks and pull the cord.

I recommend opening up the drive and giving the platters a good washing with soap and watter if you want them cleaned and no one able to retrieve the info off of them.

Aside from it's radioactivity, you wouldn't even hardly need the jug of water. Caesium is reactive enough that it'd likely react explosively to the water in the air.

Seems like the DoD can't spell.

Interesting, though. What is it you're so worried about people getting off of it?
