This is a case of people doing the right thing and in turn getting bitch slapped for it.

Bet $100 that the police car that speeded does get a fine.

I was reading an article from one of the local papers the other day, and there was a blurb about a guy who got ticketed for noise pollution. Aparently, a cop had come up to an intersection, and not wanting to wait for the red light, had hit his flashers, gone through, and then turned them off on the other side.

Edit: The guy honked at the officer.

The judge's comments to the man ticketed? "The police don't need you telling them what's right and what's wrong."

I swear, I wanted to slap that judge so hard.

The thing that's missing in the posts on this story is that these nosy neighbors, the type who would spend over a thousand dollars in equipment for the purpose of harassing people who drive past their house were sending a bunch of emails to the officer (talk about a small town, eh?), harassing him about "catching" him "endangering" their 2 year old child by driving past their house at a speed that exceeded the fairly arbitrary number stuck on a nearby post. Personally I would have already snuck up behind the cameras and trashed them repeatedly. I cannot STAND people like that.
Perrone wanted to meet to request that the couple stop e-mailing him, but only a superior court judge can enforce restrictions of this nature.
The move to get the law involved was not because of the cameras they set up but the constant emails from them.

Personally, I would suggest that they consider not letting their toddler play unattended in a fenceless front yard at the bottom of a hill.

It doesn't matter whether it's arbitrary. Black on white, it's the law (black on yellow, it's a dare ;)), and the police are expected to follow the law. This does mean that they are, unless dealing with an emergency situation, legally obligated to abide by the posted speed limits.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

My pet peeve is officers who don't bother following the laws they enforce. The last ticket I got, I marked down at least five individual infractions. My ticket was over violating a pedestrian's right-of-way (some dude was loitering in a crosswalk). Strictly speaking, I did violate it, but I slowed down to a near stop, and this guy made absolutely no move to cross; I didn't even see him cross later, and I was watching him because I thought he was acting weird. A second fact in my defense is that there was a truck parked next to the crosswalk, and there was no street light there. This is an odd crosswalk that's not actually at an intersection; it's just randomly between blocks.

OK, first this officer violates that same right-of-way (he was only about fifty feet ahead of me, on the other side of the street), he makes and illegal u-turn (STOPS in the middle of the street, no less), violates the right of way again (said pedestrian STILL hasn't crossed... 15 seconds later), the officer makes maybe 40 in a 25, blows through a stop sign, continues until he's riding RIGHT on my butt (I'm pretty sure he was trying to park up my tailpipe) for about half a mile, and THEN turns on his lights to pull me over.

Then he gives me crap about driving responsibly and paying attention to my surroundings. GRAHHH!!!! [/rant]

OK, I'm cool. It's just happened to me a lot. I don't get ticketed much, but I keep getting pulled over for BS reasons (example; one officer said I had a crack in my taillight; when I looked for it when I got home, I COULDN'T FIND IT!). Note that I am a good driver, if you want to take my word for it; I don't even have some flashy car, it's always been an early 90's all stock Honda. Just a get-around mobile.

I suspect they wanted money from a lawsuit.
