I'm looking to get a new computer

I'm looking to get a new computer

Post by hypnochan » Sat Mar 10, 2007 1:15 am

Basically, I need it to do a few things:

-Run UO (ultima Online, but really, if you're in this forum, you should know that...)
-Run Adobe Photoshop
-Run cuteFTP
-Operate a high-er end scanner/printer unit
-Run like, 5 internet browswers at once.

... And that's pretty much it. Any suggestions as to what I should go for? Like, what level ram, processors, etc?

Photoshop requirements go from fairly basic to incredibly high. UO's requirements are fairly low (and really isn't as popular as it might seem).

That said, any Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2 CPU should work. Your memory requirements are going to be from 1GB to 4GB, depending on your Photoshop work. Any SATA2 hard drive with 16MB of cache, space dependent on your needs.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

The photoshop work'll stay pretty basic, so 1GB should be fine. I just don't want to slap a Gateway or Dell together and end up with more than I need in one area, and not enough in another area, when I could go down to the local geek store and get a custom for a good price.

I just needed a base to start from. Thanks ^_^

I would suggest hitting up http://www.ibuypower.com if you're looking for pre-built systems. That, or your local system builder.

If you're in the California Central Valley, I know just the place :)

I'm looking to pre-build, with a bit of assistance from my cousin. Who happens to own the local geek store xD

I just currently have no idea what's out there to know where to start, and I know what I need, it's just hard to translate it to my cousin, we never seem to speak the same language at the same time...

Oddly enough, this computer should serve your purposes. Which I own. :shifty:

But it's cheap, and it works. Emachines is very reliable, at least from experience. Most of my family and friends have one.

Please don't buy that computer. I'll almost pay you not to buy that system...or, atleast, give you a decent deal on a custom system.

Speaking from experience, we get more dead eMachines into our service department than any other brand, Dell included. The second runner up would have to be Shuttle (which we, unfortunately, sold for a while). Dell is after that, then HP, then whiteboxes which range from between 3 and 9 years old, then recent white boxes, then systems we build ;)

If you're in the Stockton-Modesto-Turlock-ish area (when I said "Central" I freaking meant it) of CA (or don't mind traveling here from further north or south), hit me up via PM and I'll give you directions to my shop. We work with customers and businesses from as far south as Bakersfield and San Louis Obisbo and as far north as Windsor or Redding. Completely custom systems with a 2year standard warranty. Couple weeks ago, I astounded myself by building a $417 system which knocked the sox (component-wise) off of any big box OEM you'd find for that price.

Just look up what Adobe recommend for using photoshop, and not the minimum reqs.

Then buy that, you don't need any more.

Eh, I'm trying to avoid pre-built. My grandmother's eMachine -does- run good for her, but she's on it all of 6 hours in a month, and I've done enough tech support for her ^^;

General consensus is as long as I go by the adobe requirements I should be cool on the rest. Thanks all xD

And no, I don't live in CA, I have been looking to move, so maybe that'll make it to the list of possible places *nods*

eMachines seem pretty hit-or-miss. Personally, I've run into very few problems with them, and had even owned one at one point that was speedy and reliable (and actually, still runs to this day -- not my current rig). I've also had pretty good experiences with Gateway systems.

A custom build is the best way to go, IMO. You know exactly what's in it, you get better quality parts, and if someone who knows what they're doing builds it for you, you're more likely to end up with a system that you can upgrade for a couple of years, increasing the time before you have to shell out for a whole new box.

Fixed.

Trackballs are good for people who can't keep their work area clear of clutter and need a mousing solution that doesn't move.

Back on topic, being an intense photoshop user and a gamer. She doesn't need anything remarkable. I do all the above and then some on a bottom end AMD X2, w/2gb of DDR400.

Tablet? Can you play a FPS with a tablet? I think not.

And trackballs are better, mess or no mess. People with crap dexterity or gimp hands need a mousing solution with no class.

Tablet's have their place. Trackballs will never be as fast as a good mouse. Go look up 'gaming trackball' -vs- 'gaming mouse' and tell me what you find. Short answer, trackballs are not fantastic for everyone or even half of the minority for that matter.

Tablet's are fantastic for any media creation setup, not gaming, really that's a given.
