US Army

Post by Jordan- » Mon Mar 12, 2007 8:17 pm

I am not sure what I want to do with my life. I don't want to be working at arbys for the rest of my life, this much I do know. I thought about joining the military.

My first choice was the Air Force, but I am wanting to enlist when I am 17, and that means I will have to get my GED.

Well, The air force is more of a highschool diploma branch, so my second choice was the Army. Will I still have good opportunities in the US Army with a GED?

I am wanting to make a career out of this.

why not wait the extra year and get the diploma... or are you saying you're not in high school?

I have a predicament. I was pulled out of Highschool for reasons that I don't really care to share to do homeschooling online. It's not exactly how I had planned my life, but it's what happened. I fall more and more behind with every passing day.

I'm most likely going to be getting my GED, no matter what. Will I still be able to lead a good life in the military? Will some options be closed off to me?

I know there are a couple people here who either are in the military or have been in the past, but I'd suggest talking to a recruiter. They might try to feed you a line of bullshit but I think they should be able to give you some good information.

However I think it would be best if you caught up with your school work and got a diploma. If you're having trouble keeping up with your work now, what do you think will happen in boot camp? It's not going to be easier.

Understandable. The Army I can't really say much about. I have several good friends in the Air Force, however, each with a high school degree. I can safely say that they are all doing pretty well in life. None of them complain about where they are (of course, they miss home and can't wait to be back around family) or how much they are being paid. To be honest, I don't know what the requirements for the Air Force say about GED vs. Diploma.

To be honest, I think the question of whether you can lead a good life in the military is dependent on, like most things in life, how much you apply yourself. The only army vets I've known to not be enjoying themselves are ones that I know to be lazy and fell the world owes them everything. I guess so long as you can avoid that mentality you can lead as good of a life as you need while in the Army.

Oh yeah.. forgot to mention: everyone I know in the Air Force has also told me that 90% of everything their recruiter told them was a straight up lie... I don't mean to contradict what Minx is saying, just conveying what I've been told.

No worries about contradicting me. I've never spoken with a recruiter personally so I don't know how truthful they are. I'm admittedly naiive and hopeful about that kind of thing.

Seriously, don't join the Army. Ever. I'm in the Marines. It sucks but I thank God every day I wake up that I'm not in the Army. They are the stupidest bunch of bitches ever. I'm around them every day because our bases are right next to each other (I'm in Iraq right now, by the way). Seriously though, it depends on what you're looking for in the experience. If you're looking for career opportunities I would suggest either the Navy or the Air Force. If you're looking for the "military experience"...well...I guess you could join the Marines. But, please, save yourself, don't join the Army.

One of my friends is in the Navy, 12 years in fact. There's a reason he refers to them as "Muscles are required, Intelligence not essential".

and then if you are looking for more.. 'important' factors... the Air Force is known for having their women called Air Mattresses... and apparently with good reason.

No, wrong.

They are called 'Marine Core Mattress', usually with a hint of jealousy. Please get your military slang and jargon correct. ;P

The Navy isn't so hot either. An old gunny sergeant used to say to me (well, to anyone who would listen really), that yes, the Marine Core was Department of the Navy..the men's department.

Well Jordan-,

I guess I should put my 2 cents in. I haven't done much on this forum but I am in the Navy.

The most important thing you should do is talk to ALL the recruiters for all the services you are considering. I talked with all (save the marines. A promise to my mom so nothing against my marine brothers and sisters.) the recruiters twice. I started with the Army and he gave me his whole sales pitch for them. I then went to the Air Force and they gave me there pitch but at the same time told me everything about the Army the recruiter left out. Then it was on to the Navy. Just go in this circuit twice and you'll have a good grasp on what all the services can offer you. Good bad and Ugly.

I chose the Navy because they gave me a guaranteed contract for what I would be doing and it was in a technical field. Just make sure your willing to stay the coarse for 4 years. It's not a good thing to get out early for ANY reason.

Hope this helps.
Why oh why am I not covered in Jell-O??

Just so you know, any service will give you a contract for a certain job, provided you meet the requirements, some require special tests, etc.

Oh, and said contract is void if you wash out (think don't graduate on time) for any reason, medical, academic, anything.

The army will destroy your soul.

At least my brother is in and he hates it.

It's not for everyone. Recruiters are bastards.

Don't do the army, you can do twice or three time in the civil if you're good enough.
