My friend is from Ohio, but lived in Singapore for a few years and does the "lah" thing occasionally. It's kinda...irritating.
Query: what about using other languages when speaking romantically? Is that the same thing, or is that different entirely? Because if not, I might be just as guilty as the "desu" folks.

Actually, pretty much, except that I don't know a lick of French. So I use Spanish and Japanese words/phrases on occasion. My girlfriend occasionally drops a line or two in Gaelic, and I guess that's where it started with me.

AzraeL, I wouldn't fault a Japanese forumite throwing in a "ne" like that, though it would be kind of annoying, nor would I fault a Singaporean forumite throwing "la" in there. I'm was referencing Americans who do that kind of stuff...

I enjoy the pleasures of the mind more than of the flesh...therefore, I would love to digitize not only my body, but my mind.
Maybe, take my mind and throw it into the vast expanses of the net? Think of the possibilities! Hell, I could even hang out with Real Life Comics characters online all the time.
Just have to watch out for those weird sites...like, Scientology, or the Britney Spears Fan Club.

I've been known to do things like this on occasion...but generally not in forums. Once I started to get the hang of Chinese, I found it invading my English so I started to say things like, "I want to go to the museum suoyi I can get extra credit for class." Yeah, it happened...weird for me, even weirder for the people trying to figure out "Suoyi" (所以).

I hate it when people spout japanese to sound cool. People don't do it in Welsh, German, Italian, Latin, Esperanto, French, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese, Afrikaans, and why? Because none of those make you sound like an animé fanboy, and thus, not cool, or kawaii. It's bloody annoying. I understand that some words and phrases have come into the English language and have been welcomed. It's what gives our language a certain je ne sais quoi. However, these haven't. So why use them? There are hundreds of thousands of words in the English language. How about learning to use (and SPELL, PLEASE) them?
Sloth: Am I a year behind already?

February was some lyrics or quotes month or something. I don't even remember what year all this was.

Hey hey hey...there is a huge fan base for Diablo II...or are you implying that Diablo II is not pleasurable? Either way, yes, I do enjoy Diablo II, there must be something messing with you Kernel32.DLL.

What about when people use phrases from other languages* for reasons other than quote-unquote "to be cool"?
(*let's just ignore the fact that many commonplace "english" words started off as words from other languages, too)
And I find it kinda funny that you chide people (mostly americans) from stealing the words of other languages, and then throw a "bloody" in there, as well as using "je ne sais quoi". I mean, what the fuck. Instead of using that and bloody, how about learning to use one or two of the many thousands of english words availible?
Pfft ... Who determines what foreign words and slang and whatnot are 'valid' for use in english, and which ones aren't?
