There's something weird about this. While the French jokes are very popular mostly in the US, there's no reason at all that can explain why their opinion about the French is that bad. I know, it's only a small minority but still.
And saying that French never bath is like saying that American ares all fat, it's a stereotype.
The thing is, the jokes are about Stereotypes. We aren't making fun of any real French people, just the funny stereotypes. Evidentally Californians go to the beach every day and we all drive convertibles. The New Yorkers are surly and mean people who will yell at you from inside their taxi cab. All Texans own ranches and wear cowboy hats constantly, even when wearing a business suit. British people all have sloped foreheads and horrible teeth. Everyone know that these aren't true of the average group, yet it doesn't make it any less funny to tell jokes about.

That's actually true.
Though, by the way, there are no fat cowboys, only fat rednecks.

Arminius, Any comments about the link I posted with the comment on the 40 immortals?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4840160.stm
It does not have to deal with the immortals but about France's President Chirac.

The Soviet built 58,000 T34 while the Germans built only 1500 Tiger (+500 Tiger II). Stastistically speaking, the Germans had plenty of tank to kill. The Tiger is nice, but the Tiger II is a freaking monster with a 180 mm armour, 88 mm gun and faster than the Tiger I. Its problem was its suspension. That tank was waaay too heavy for its torsion bar and too many of them broke because of that. But I prefer the Soviet KV1 or IS-2

We tell French jokes even here so. We like the company of French people but we think they become annoying after a certain time. The saying is "We're happy when they arrive, we're happy when they leave."

You know, this is typically Chirac. Chirac sounds too often like an old stubborn bastard. I don't know what was his problem. He must still think that French is the premier language of Europe.

That's questionable. The French people use a lot of English words like parking, weekend, sweatshirt, pull over, chewing gum, shopping, planning, ferry, cookie, I could easily name 50 more. Chirac is probably the only guy in France who doesn't use them.Chirac (BBC) wrote:"France has great respect for its language."

Buy a frenchman for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth.

-I don't think Germans had the materials to build enough simpler tanks to make up for the techinical difference.
-They were already having serious problems with keeping the smaller number of tanks moving, it would have been very difficult to keep an even larger armoured force fueled up.
-Tiger I began production in late 1942, Tiger II in 1944, they didn't have much influence on the large scale as the outcome of the war was pretty much clear early 1943 when Stalingrad encirclement fell to Soviets. After that only question was how much could the Germans cushion the blow.
Soviet campaign was a fools effort, but that's what you get with a looney in charge.
I'm sure I remember seeing a story once (probably several years ago now) about a new government department whose job it was to supply French replacements for words such as those (the best example I can remember is the desire to replace email, being a shortening of electronic mail, with something derived from apt French terms.) Whether this was at all related to the "40 immortals" group I can't recall and I can't seem to find any reference to it now.
The only thing I can find to backup my memory is Wikipedia's English article on email where you can browse down the long list of alternate language versions of the article, many countries (including Germany, Italy, Hungary, Denmark & Holland) use email or e-mail, though France is from from alone in not doing so.

Even there, looney is still a sympathetic appellation for that guy.

That's a pretty good example indeed. The French used email for the last decade. But the Académie needed an equivalent for the French language. They chose a word that we were using in Québec for many years "Courriel" (for Courrier Electronique). It doesn't happen too often. The 40 immortels tend to be arrogant toward our words.

IIRC, my French professor in college mentioned that the French government and the Quebec government were both trying to limit the Franglishization of the French language.

They should take a page from us Americans. Spanish, French, American Indian (don't really know what to call their languages as group...), some ye olde Latin, Italian, toss all that in a blender with English as the base, and hey! You're ready for America!

Yes, but remember the most aggressive and adventurous of European rootstock came to America - the Timid stayed home.
