Virginia Tech Shooting

Post by spikegirl7 » Mon Apr 16, 2007 10:50 pm

As most of you know by now there was a shooting at Virginia Tech this morning. My thoughts go out to all the victims. It is a horrible event.

Currently 33 are reported dead and many are wounded.

I was on campus today (University of Toledo), and somebody had set up an impromptu anti-gun rally near the Student Union.

Never mind that I don't agree with him. Never mind that a person this intent on killing a lot of people is going to find a way to do it even without guns. I just wanted to shove him out of the way and ask everyone what the hell was wrong with them, that they couldn't wait even one day to simply find out what happened and mourn the students. I wanted to accuse him of sitting in some darkened office somewhere, rubbing his hands together in glee as the shooting unfolded, thinking with delight how this forwarded his cause.

You don't use something like this on the DAY it happened to get political.

Dam, it's up two more.

Blaze, Not to mention that VT already forbids students from having a gun on campus, so it wouldn't have made jack &#$%#$ of difference. Now on the other hand, if students were allowed to have guns on campus...

Back on topic, from what I've heard, the guy was a student at Radford (another college down the road) and was looking for his girlfriend. General description was an asian guy ~20 wearing a black jacket, which is why there is a photo of an asian reporter wearing a black jacket getting tackled by the police floating around.

:(

I've been watching CNN / listening to the radio all day.

Regardless of it's relative magnitude, it's still extra shocking / depressing when it happens in your backyard (relatively) and when it happens somewhere where it's not more or less par for the course...

Blaze: is it incomprehensible that ... some people cope with tragedy by moping, some with humor (I <3 Fark... heh. "Students snapping and killing students, I can see; but students out of bed at 7am? Something's fishy here...") - is it incomprehensible that some people deal with it by focusing on the realtedish (relevant, to them) political issues (and, perhaps, just maybe they really believe in their cause and their way of dealing with it is trying to keep it from happening again the way they know how)?

And since adciv brought it up, what's the time limit on keeping politics out of it?

How about until we get the official police report so we have some idea what actually occured with some level of accuracy.

What? You don't want news from people that were at the University itself?

Oh, sure I do. Just, you know, never mind all the conflicting reports, students placing him in buildings he was never at, etc. We all know day-of on-site reports from "eye witnesses" are so trustable.

How do you know he was never there? Maybe he was there in the period before he was in Norris and didn't do anything. Unless you mean "he was never there in a violent capacity", which I guess seems to be true unless we find a hidden body or something.

Exactly. That's why I mean... put all the CRAP on hold, and take a day or two to let it all come in... absorb it all, deal with it, put it in perspective... THEN decide how it should change lives.

Old friend of mine goes to Virginia, found out that he was alright though. I heard that there was a shooting earlier and when the Head of the school heard of the first attack he heard the second one in progress.

I woke up to it on the radio's world news section. I'm a horrible person, but my first thought was "How long until someone works grand theft auto into this?". Granted, my second was about the horrible fear they'd have experienced shortly before a loud crack, and depending on the accuracy, a burning pain, accompanied them to sleep, but it's hardly redeeming. Just me working on empathy, really.
