Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
Wahoo, I just got my CD's. The funny part is that I got MasteR's cds at the same time as the ones I sent away for. But who cares, I get to finally try out Linux.

Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
Well now you have more discs to give away to friends.

Well...
I finally got Feisty working. I know, I know, it took too damn long...
My problem was, none of the discs for Feisty would work for me. I'd download the disk (in Edgy), burn the disk, stick it back in, reboot, begin installing...and of course, it'd get as far as nuking my hard drive before crashing hard. So out come the Dapper CDs once again...
But I finally got everything figured out (except Beryl). Whoo.

Which, oddly enough, came out clean every time. Hey, I dunno...I've got Feisty now, so I'm happy.

Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
The old IBM P2 gave it up yesterday. No more power up. It has a logic circuit power supply that will not even turn on if something is wrong, and no lights are a' burning, so something somewhere has given it up. It was a almost ten years old, and for four or five of those it ran non-stop in corpreica as a workstation/desktop. I've gutted the drives and memory, added the cables to my collection, and placed it next to the other two machines to take to the recovery facility.
I put 7.04 on my desktop in a dual boot. Ubuntu has it's own hard drive, so the drives did not have to be mucked about with much. I've turned wireless off, as I don't need it now. I will revisit WPA in a few months. I tried to get my laserjet to print, but I need to read the instructions. Evidently it isn't idiot proof.

If there is a Linux driver for your printer then it is likely in feisty. Most printers installs just go "System->Administration->Printing->New Printer" and then follow the wizard. I haven't had one not work that way.

Only slightly off topic:
Dell has begun selling machines with Feisty preloaded.

Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
Finally, the Linux revolution begins. Viva la Ubuntu!!!
In other news... I am trying to figure out just how much space Ubuntu will need to function properly and have room left over for a program or two. I already have XP on my main hard drive and I just do not want to give to much of my space to Ubuntu and not be able to install any more of my games on the XP partition.

Is it just me, or does the command line interface composited over the laptop screen look a whole lot like the result of a DIR command in WinXP?

Thats a FreeDOS box, which they have offered for a while. They lumped the FreeDOS and the Ubuntu into a "Open Source Systems" page.

Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
Anyone, anyone. Any ideas on how big the partition needs to be for a minimum? I know that the OS needed 2 gigs, but how much extra space should I use for programs and files?Cyberliger777 wrote:I am trying to figure out just how much space Ubuntu will need to function properly and have room left over for a program or two. Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
The smallest non server system I ran Ubuntu on was a 10gb drive dual booted. It had 4gb for Linux. I ran out of space quick, but it worked.
How much you will need will depend on how much you use it and what you use it for, though. What will this be used for?

Re: Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released Today
I was just going to use it to start off as my venture into the Linux world. But as I learn I want to be able to download new programs and use it as my second OS.
