Well if you want room to grow to install things and download stuff then bigger is better. Up to you.

Can you get a cheap second hard drive?

A total size of 6GB should suit you for most things, as long as you don't let /home get out of hand. (If you think that might happen, set up a separate partition for /home, using 1.5GB or so.) Your swap partition should be about twice your RAM if you have 512MB or less, and scale it from there down to a 1:1 ratio at 2GB. You should still have some swap even above 2GB, but you may be able to start diminishing it.

You know... Take the above advice if you want, but if not, simplify it this way:

/ - 6GB
swap - 2GB

That will set you for your first time, and you'll probably wipe and rebuild at least once so you can tweak it later.
